The Indiana Hoosiers own college football’s longest winning streak, having won 21 consecutive games. But they face another undefeated team this week, at one of the worst possible times. The Nebraska Cornhuskers have been waiting for a chance to make a statement that they’re back under Matt Rhule, who’s yet to beat a top 25 team in Lincoln. They’ve got a golden opportunity with Indiana, as the Hoosiers have a critical home game against Ohio State waiting for them next week. We break down our Indiana vs. Nebraska prediction, look at the odds of this Big Ten contest and offer our picks for this game.

Two years ago, Nebraska’s visit to Indiana served as the Hoosiers’ notification that they were for real. Indiana carried an undefeated mark into that game, but the Hoosiers hadn’t really proven themselves at the halfway point of the 2024 schedule.

That changed as Indiana forced five turnovers and blasted Nebraska 56-7, which remains the worst loss of the Matt Rhule era. It proved a catalyst for the Huskers, as Nebraska lost five of its final six that year and just barely squeezed into a bowl game. Indiana, meanwhile, ended up making the College Football Playoff, completely turning around its program.

Now the Huskers want to turn the tables.

Nebraska has a 5-0 record, but nobody on the Cornhuskers’ slate has been that impressive. A win here would completely change that narrative and announce Nebraska as a real contender in the Big Ten. That said, nobody in college football has managed to adjust to Curt Cignetti’s program. The Hoosiers are 32-2 over the past 2 ½ seasons, losing only to Ohio State and Notre Dame. If Nebraska can join those names, it would be a major step for Rhule’s team.

Indiana vs. Nebraska Odds

The public seems to be divided on this game. On one hand, 60% of the money is on Indiana at -7.5. On the other, the line could be heading to -8.5, which would likely bring some money back toward Nebraska. The line started at -8.5, so the public has gone back and forth about whether or not the line should move.

Nebraska isn’t an underdog at home very often. It’s only happened five times in the Matt Rhule era, and the Huskers haven’t handled it all that well. They’ve covered only once as a home dog — last year against USC, when they lost by four and covered on the hook.

Here’s a breakdown of the lines, with the best odds coming at FanDuel.

These numbers indicate expectations for a strong offensive showing, which fits well with both teams’ offensive performances to date. is in line with how both teams like to play. The oddsmakers believe Indiana is about 10 points better than Nebraska on a neutral field. The implied probability of this game says Nebraska has a 29% chance to win the game. That’s right around the standard probability for home underdogs, who cash the moneyline about 27% of the time. It’s around where one would expect the number to be with this spread.

Indiana clearly isn’t the same team that rolled to the national title last season. But the Hoosiers still look pretty strong, and it’s important to remember that it took time for them to get to a quality unit last year as well.

The offense has done what it’s needed to, and the Hoosiers finally put together a sharp performance in routing Rutgers last week. The Scarlet Knights certainly aren’t one of the better teams in the Big Ten, but Indiana impressed with how it didn’t beat itself. The Hoosiers committed no penalties and no turnovers in the win, playing a clean game for a 28-point road victory.

That’s a hallmark of Curt Cignetti’s teams, and it’s why Indiana has become so difficult to defeat. Cignetti’s Hoosiers have turned the ball over just 18 times in 34 games. That leads the nation for the fewest giveaways, and it speaks to how disciplined Indiana plays. When the Hoosiers constantly end their possession with either points or flipping the field, it’s hard to get ahead of them.

As with Indiana, Nebraska’s improved discipline has been part of its progression. In year one of the Matt Rhule era in Lincoln, the Huskers were minus-17 in turnovers. Last year, they improved to plus-2, winning seven regular season games for the first time since 2016.

The Huskers are again taking care of the football to this point. Nebraska has turned the ball over twice in five games, and the Huskers seem to have used their disaster in Indiana as a turning point. Nebraska won or tied the turnover battle in 11 of 12 regular-season games last year, only failing to do so against Maryland.

The Huskers’ offense has been their biggest strength this season. They have yet to score less than 30 points, albeit against much weaker competition than Indiana.

Indiana vs. Nebraska Prediction: Indiana -7.5 (-110)

This isn’t an easy prediction to make, given that Indiana has the Ohio State game looming. But the Hoosiers have been incredibly disciplined under Cignetti, and teams like that usually don’t get caught in a look-ahead spot.

The Hoosiers move the ball well and have shown they can handle the pressure of a hostile crowd. Nebraska has a solid 5-0 record, but the Huskers have yet to show they can handle the elites of the Big Ten. Until they do, the value is on the team that’s proven itself against top competition.
