The Houston Cougars believe they’re one of the top teams in the Big 12. But to get that recognition, they’ve got to actually beat another of the league’s best. They’ve got an opportunity to do that in Salt Lake City, as they face the Utah Utes. Utah holds an unbeaten record on the year, but the Utes haven’t exactly looked great in recent weeks. Their mark seems to have more to do with facing lesser opponents than their own strength. Plus, they’ve never managed to beat Houston in their brief history with the Cougars. With the meat of the schedule coming up for the hosts, they have to break this streak if they’re going to make the playoff. We offer our Houston vs. Utah prediction, review the odds of this Big 12 contest and give our picks for this game.

Even though both sides are ranked, Houston and Utah haven’t gotten a lot of respect nationally.

Part of that’s because of the conference they play in. The Big 12 is still seen as a hodgepodge conference that isn’t quite on the level of the SEC or the Big Ten. It’s had no success in the playoff, as both of its representatives have played one game and been immediately dismissed. In the four-team era, it was even worse. All-time, the Big 12 is 1-8 in the playoff. Until they get a team past one game, the lack of respect will likely continue.

That said, this still represents a proving ground for both teams. The winner claims the inside track on the Big 12, especially with BYU getting picked off by Central Florida. For Houston especially, it’s a chance to announce itself on the big stage. The Cougars have waited for this chance ever since they made their return to the power conferences in 2023, and so far, they’ve yet to have the success they wanted. Last year marked a step forward, but it didn’t include a win against any of the top teams in the conference. Beating Utah would show the Cougars have arrived.

Houston vs. Utah Odds

The public believes in Houston, but enough sharp money has come in to keep the line from moving. Houston has 76% of the tickets, but the line has held fast at its open of Utah -6.5. That says that the line is set exactly where both sides expect it, and it’s not likely to move again.

Utah has had no success against Houston, losing all five meetings. To be fair, four of those matchup predate everyone on Utah’s sideline, including coach Morgan Scalley. The last time the teams met in Salt Lake City was in 1977, when Houston was a power conference team and Utah wasn’t.

Here’s a breakdown of the lines, with the best odds coming at Caesars.

These numbers indicate expectations for a track meet. Both defenses have had their problems stopping their foes this year, while their offenses have been very difficult to stop. The oddsmakers believe Utah is about 3.5 points better than Houston on a neutral field. The implied probability of this game says Houston has a 33% chance to win the game. That’s not bad value for a road underdog, if you’re betting the moneyline.

Houston is at its best when it needs to be. The Cougars are leading the nation in converting on third down, hitting on 61.4% of their third down attempts. It helps that quarterback Connor Weigman has been careful with the football, tossing 20 touchdowns against just two interceptions.

It also helps that the Cougars’ run game has averaged over 200 yards per game. Makhi Hughes has been the biggest part of that, and he’ll have a difficult challenge against an aggressive Utah defense that rarely allows big runs. In this situation, Houston can opt for either the pass or run, and the Cougars will likely let the game come to them.

Based on Utah’s defensive history, that’s probably going to mean putting the ball in Weigman’s hands more than Hughes. Utah’s defense is weaker against the pass than the run, and Weigman has shown he can be trusted to make the right reads. As long as he doesn’t try to do too much, Houston has an edge.

Utah’s way to win this game is simple: it has to go for the pass. The Utes have a good running game behind Wayshawn Parker, but almost nobody runs the ball on Houston. The Cougars rank sixth in the nation against the run, but 128th against the pass.

That means this needs to be Devon Dampier’s game. Dampier hasn’t been quite as dominant as Weigman, but he has been careful with the football. He’s over 1,000 passing yards for the year, has just four interceptions against 15 touchdowns and racks up the first downs. Utah hits the big plays often and moves the chains regularly, both of which match up well with Houston’s weaknesses.

The Utes have another advantage against the Cougars: they rarely come into the red zone without getting points. Utah scores 90.6% of the time when it enters the red zone, and the Utes are likely to be there often.

Houston vs. Utah Prediction: Houston +6.5 (-102)

Houston has played a tougher schedule than Utah. The Cougars might have a loss to their name, but they’ve gone to Kansas State and won, and they’ve got home wins over Oklahoma State and UCF. Utah’s three Big 12 opponents were a combined 1-8 going into the week, and although Kansas did beat Baylor to get its first league win, the Utes have still faced the weakest teams in the league.

This is a major step up in difficulty for the Utes. They didn’t look great against Colorado or Kansas, and it’s tough to consider them prepared for this game. With that being the case, it’s hard to trust them with this spread.
