College Football Win Totals Picks for August 2026: Terrapins Likely to Struggle

When it comes to college football win totals, the names on the schedule make a world of difference. For example, USC might have one of the more talented squads in the country. But in the top-heavy Big Ten, the Trojans managed a schedule that includes all of Ohio State, Oregon, Indiana and Penn State.
Because of that, the Trojans aren’t expected to win more than nine games. Conversely, Indiana’s schedule only includes one of the Big Ten heavyweights, and the Hoosiers didn’t schedule anyone impressive outside the league. Indiana offers no value among college football win totals, because the Hoosiers are expected to win at least 10 games.
Finding the right win totals each August requires analyzing the schedule and where teams are likely to exceed or fall short of expectations. For these teams, there’s an opportunity to cash in where the bookmakers might have erred.
Maryland Terrapins: Under 5.5 Wins (-125, DraftKings)
Mike Locksley needs a big year to keep his job. Unfortunately for the Terrapins, it’s very hard to find six wins on this schedule. Maryland can only expect to be favored twice in Big Ten play: home against Rutgers and at Purdue.
The Terrapins probably aren’t going to have much hope against Ohio State, USC or Penn State. Illinois, Nebraska, UCLA and Wisconsin also project to be improved. To even have a chance at six wins, the Terrapins have to beat at least one of those teams.
They also can’t afford a mistake in the non-conference. The Terrapins play a trap game at Connecticut, and then come home to face Virginia Tech. New Virginia Tech coach James Franklin is 9-1 in his past 10 games with Maryland, with the one loss coming during the pandemic season.
There’s a good argument to go bold and pick Maryland to only win four games at +170. But the goal is just to win, and backing Maryland Under 5.5 seems the most reasonable play.
Florida Gators: Over 7.5 Wins (+130, BetMGM)
The Gators should not have been a four-win team last year. Florida clearly gave up on the season, giving some embarrassing efforts at Kentucky and Tennessee. This season under Jon Sumrall should be different. Sumrall hasn’t failed to make a conference championship game as a head coach.
That streak probably ends this year, but the Gators should still have a shot at eight wins. Auburn, Missouri and South Carolina are winnable games, and Florida has a chance to be 5-1 when it rolls into Austin to face Texas.
The Gators do have to play both Texas and Georgia, but they gave their best efforts in those two games last season. That resulted in a win over the Longhorns and a four-point loss to the Dawgs, showing what the Gators could be.
The end of the year eases considerably. If that two-game stretch doesn’t kill Florida’s season, eight wins are within reach.
NC State Wolfpack: Over 7.5 Wins (+120, DraftKings)
If the goal was to have a campaign that looked great, NC State scheduled brilliantly. Seven of their first 10 games are at home, and only three games all season even require a flight. The Wolfpack initially were going to have to go to Brazil to play Virginia, but logistical issues moved that game to Charlottesville.
The lack of travel means a better opportunity for State to stack wins. Without Miami, SMU or Clemson on the schedule, the best opponent the Wolfpack face is Louisville. That game comes at home, and there’s reason to think State could be favored in 10 of its 12 games this year. Getting plus money for eight wins makes this one of the best college football win totals value plays for 2026.
USC Trojans: Under 8.5 Wins (-130, Caesars)
There’s simply no margin for error. USC will be the underdog in at least three games: Oregon (Sept. 26), Ohio State (Oct. 31) and at Indiana (Nov. 14). That means the Trojans have to either pull an upset or win every game where they’re favored for this to cash. And under Lincoln Riley, USC has lost at least two games as a favorite every year.
There’s more: USC hasn’t figured out the travel in the Big Ten. When the Trojans joined, they introduced the need to cross two or more time zones for half their road games. That has not worked well: USC is 2-6 in the Eastern and Central time zones under Riley.
In addition to Indiana, the Trojans cross three time zones to play both Penn State and Maryland. If either is a loss, USC fails to meet one of the more ambitious college football win totals in 2026.
