The definition of a college football championship sleeper has changed again for 2026. After last year’s mess involving the ACC and Notre Dame, all four power conference champions are now guaranteed a bid to the College Football Playoff. As for the Irish, if they make the top 12, they receive an automatic bid as well.

That would have changed things dramatically, as neither Miami nor Alabama would have qualified for the playoff. Instead, Duke would have made it at 8-5, by virtue of winning the ACC. That caveat now means any Power 4 team outside the top 15 can be considered a potential college football championship sleeper.

In the NIL era, sleepers are far more common than they used to be. The days of penciling in Alabama vs. Clemson for the national title are long gone. Last year, six of the preseason top 10 made the playoffs. Three others fired their coach and barely qualified for a bowl game.

Meanwhile, Mississippi came from 21st to reach the last four. Of course, Indiana stunned everyone by going from No. 20 to the first 16-0 season. So there’s a lot of good reason to pick a sleeper with some upside.

Here are some of the best potential college football championship sleeper picks.

Penn State to Make the Playoff (+360, DraftKings)

The Nittany Lions will get little credit for their schedule, so they’ll have to go 10-2 or better to have a chance. But this schedule is set up for Penn State to do that. The toughest team on the schedule is USC, and the Nittany Lions should be the more talented team most nights.

There are two big questions: can Matt Campbell’s transfers handle moving to the Big Ten, and can the Nittany Lions handle it if they meet adversity? Last year, Penn State crumbled after losing at home to Oregon, and James Franklin paid with his job. Expectations are lower nationally, but not inside the program. At No. 18 overall, Penn State’s in the right spot to make a run at the playoff.

Boise State to Make the Playoff (+550, BetMGM)

When making college football championship sleeper picks, the rule is to stick to the top 25, unless it’s the Group of 6’s representative. Boise State is just outside the top 25, but it’s the third school receiving votes. That puts the Broncos a step ahead of the competition for the G6 auto-bid.

So does opening with Oregon. As long as the Broncos don’t get annihilated by the Ducks, they will get credit for traveling to Autzen Stadium. If Boise can keep the game competitive in the fourth before bowing to Oregon, it will establish itself as one of the top G6 squads.

The Broncos appear head and shoulders above their competition in the new Pac-12. If Boise State arrives at the playoff at 12-1 with a Pac-12 championship and the loss coming at Oregon, it will be almost impossible for the Broncos to miss the playoff.

BYU to Win the College Football Playoff (+9000, DraftKings)

Playing in the Big 12 gives BYU an easier path to the playoff. The Cougars return a talented defense and don’t have to beat themselves up the way the SEC and the Big Ten will. They also feature an underrated coach in Kalani Sitake, and they’ll have chances to prove themselves outside of the conference.

A lot of this depends on quarterback Bear Bachmeier and his receiving corps. But if they can get themselves up to speed, BYU will have chances to impress. With Texas Tech no longer a sure thing, the Cougars could even win the Big 12. If they do, they’d have to be considered a national title threat.

Houston to Win the College Football Playoff (+35000, FanDuel)

Houston probably isn’t a true contender to win the national title. But when a team sits in the preseason top 25 and carries odds of 350-1, either the voters have made a serious error, or that team is worth considering as a college football championship sleeper pick.

Houston has its quarterback returning in Connor Wiegman and hit the transfer portal hard. The additions have the Cougars sitting on the edge of the top 25, but the books haven’t bought their changes. That’s created excellent value, and it’s worth throwing a dart.
