The BYU Cougars are coming off one of the biggest wins in program history. They took Notre Dame’s best punch and emerged with a victory, rising to No. 2 in the nation. But the week after a win has been a tough spot for teams around the country this year, and they face a road test against the UCF Knights. Not only is this a letdown spot for the Cougars, but UCF comes off a bye and has played its best football at home. The Knights face their own pressure with BYU coming in. If UCF can’t hold serve at home, it’s going to have to win on the road to have a chance to be bowl-eligible. If it’s not, Scott Frost will likely feel his seat in Orlando warming up. We review our BYU vs. UCF prediction, analyze the odds of this Big 12 contest and give our picks for this game.

Can BYU avoid the trap that has claimed so many teams across the nation this year? It’s been close to a sure thing every week: a team comes off a huge win the week before and plays poorly the next week, going down to defeat against a supposed lesser opponent.

Only five unbeatens remain in the nation after James Madison’s loss on Thursday at Appalachian State, and BYU faces a tricky test to remain in that group. The Cougars have won two straight without star running back LJ Martin, but it’s anyone’s guess as to how long BYU’s stable of backs can maintain that standard of play.

The Cougars have handled things well to date by relying on their defense and keeping scores low. But that’s the type of game that UCF can win when it plays at home. The Knights have allowed 49 points in three games at home, and 30 of that came in one contest. UCF doesn’t mind grinding out a low-scoring contest, and its aggressive defense can end drives quickly if the Cougars make mistakes.

BYU vs. UCF Odds

The public believes in the Cougars. The sharp money isn’t so sure. This line started at BYU -9.5, but the sharps got it down to 6.5 before a late swing sent it back on the other side of the critical number of 7. At the same time, 79% of tickets came in on the Cougars. That suggests the public is riding with BYU, but the money expects a letdown for the visitors.

UCF has badly struggled in this series. The Knights are 1-4 SU and ATS against BYU, although the teams have only shared a conference for three seasons. While Scott Frost does have a national title to his name in Orlando, he has yet to recapture the magic in his second tour of duty. He’s just 3-9 ATS in the Big 12 with the Knights.

Here’s a breakdown of the lines, with the best odds coming at FanDuel.

These numbers indicate that a very low-scoring game is expected. That was not the case last year in Provo; BYU almost hit this total by itself in a 41-21 win. But injuries have changed the expectations for both teams, leading to predictions of a defense-first, lower scoring game. The oddsmakers believe BYU is about 10.5 points better than UCF on a neutral field. The implied probability of this game says UCF has a 29.8% chance to win the game. That’s slightly better than expected for home underdogs, if you’re betting the moneyline.

Bear Bachmeier has to do everything right now for BYU. That’s worked so far, but there were times last year when he had to do too much and the results reflected it. Last week against Notre Dame, Bachmeier carried the ball 13 times, leading the Cougars. That’s not ideal, but it’s a necessity with LJ Martin hurt.

The Cougars haven’t exactly been a great offensive outfit this year, especially in Big 12 play. They’ve gotten the job done on defense, shutting down Iowa State and TCU. But the offense does just enough to get by, which risks playing with fire every week.

As long as the defense remains stellar, BYU is going to win more often than not. But if the offense breaks down against the wrong opponent, the Cougars could find themselves in a dogfight. If there’s going to be a spot for an off game, this is probably the one.

UCF really needs to force BYU into mistakes. The Knights are at their best when they force opponents into turnovers, which has happened multiple times this year. Last time out against Oklahoma State, UCF saw both the good and the bad of their defense’s aggression.

They started the game by forcing a fumble, which put them in control of the game early. But after that, Oklahoma State began to match them. UCF couldn’t keep up, and the Knights eventually buckled under that pressure. A missed field goal and a fumble returned for a score swung the game away from them, leading to the 14-point deficit.

UCF has to avoid making the crucial mistake, which they have done at home. An ideal game for the Knights would look like the TCU win, where they slowed down the run game and intercepted a pair of passes. The Frogs ended up scoring just 13 points that game, exactly where UCF wants this game to be.

BYU vs. UCF Prediction: Under 43.5 (-110)

This UCF offense simply isn’t very good. That’s why it’s a safer pick to fade the offenses for both teams rather than go all in on backing the Knights to pull the surprise.

A BYU letdown can take multiple forms, and the most likely form is a bad day from the Cougars’ offense. That’s likely to result in scoreless drives, not big plays from the Knights’ offense. UCF hasn’t yet shown the ability to cash in against a good opponent.

Taking the under protects against the front-door cover, which happened last year in Provo. BYU was giving 17 points in that game and came up with a late touchdown, pushing the margin to 20. In this game, it’s more likely that a late BYU score pushes the margin to 10, as both offenses are simply banged up.
