Over the past two decades, there’s been one constant on the Mississippi State Bulldogs’ schedule: an annual loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide. Alabama owns a 16-game win streak over Mississippi State, which hasn’t beaten the Tide since Nick Saban’s first year in Tuscaloosa. But with Mississippi State 4-0 and Alabama looking inconsistent, could things finally be changing? We offer our Alabama vs. Mississippi State prediction, look at the odds of this border battle and provide our picks for this game.

Mississippi State has received a reprieve over the past two seasons from the SEC office. Since divisional play ended, the Bulldogs are no longer tied to the SEC West, which meant they were no longer annually required to play Alabama. The Bulldogs haven’t seen the Crimson Tide since 2023, and given how poor Mississippi State had been, nobody in Starkville missed them.

There’s a real sense of optimism around Jeff Lebby’s team now. The Bulldogs have two wins in the SEC, which is as many as they’ve had in their previous three seasons combined. More impressively, they’ve finally managed to beat an SEC team other than Arkansas.

At the same time, they’ve been down this road before. Last year, they came into a home showdown with ranked Tennessee at 4-0, seemingly having made real progress. Instead, the Volunteers won the game and the Bulldogs crashed to 5-7.

And few teams are as good at giving teams a reality check as Alabama. The Crimson Tide appear to have shaken off early season rust, and they’ve won all four games by multiple scores. After Alabama’s 35-3 start against South Carolina last week, Mississippi State’s best chance to catch the Tide off guard might have come and gone.

Alabama vs. Mississippi State Odds

The money seems impressed with how the Tide smacked down the Gamecocks last week. Alabama started as a three-point favorite going into Starkville, but the line is now up to -5.5 at most sportsbooks. Even that hasn’t deterred Alabama bettors; 61% of the public remains with the Tide.

Since the death of Mike Leach, Mississippi State hasn’t had much of a home-field advantage. The Bulldogs are just 11-13 at home since Leach’s passing, and 1-12 in SEC home games. Their only home win in that stretch was last week’s win over Missouri.

BetMGM is the one place that hasn’t moved to -5.5 yet, listing the Tide at just -5. By kickoff, that option might be gone. Here’s a breakdown of the lines.

These numbers indicate expectations for a high scoring contest. The oddsmakers believe the Tide is about eight points better than Mississippi State on a neutral field. The implied probability of this game says Mississippi State has just a 35% chance to win the game. That’s still better than the normal probability for home underdogs, who cash the moneyline about 27% of the time, but it’s not really a great number for an underdog giving less than a touchdown.

Alabama started the year slowly, leading to concerns that the Tide might be vulnerable. They trailed Florida State by 11 after a quarter two weeks ago, and trailed Kentucky at the half in Lexington. Both teams succumbed to Alabama’s closing kick in the second half. The Tide outscored Florida State 44-15 over the final 40 minutes and Kentucky 32-0 in the final 30.

Against South Carolina, Alabama finally put together a complete game. The Crimson Tide were never threatened, in part because Keelon Russell got things going. Russell threw for four touchdowns against six incompletions against the Gamecocks, and if that’s a sign of things to come, Alabama’s going to be impossible to stop.

The defense remains a concern, but those didn’t appear in the first half last week. Alabama didn’t allow South Carolina to do much of anything until the final quarter, once the game was decided.

The Bulldogs have to get a big game out of Kamario Taylor. He’s looked solid so far, albeit against second-tier competition. Taylor has thrown for 14 scores against two interceptions, but both interceptions have come against SEC opposition. South Carolina and Missouri both kept Taylor in the pocket, and he’s less dangerous in that situation.

The Bulldogs also have to break the psyche of facing Alabama. Too often, teams are beaten the moment they see the crimson jerseys, and Mississippi State has been one of those teams. None of the past six meetings have come closer than 23 points.

Alabama vs. Mississippi State Prediction: Alabama -5 (-112)

Up until Alabama’s showing against South Carolina, backing Mississippi State as a home dog made sense. But the Crimson Tide looked like their old selves last time out. They’ve been a better bet than people think; they’re 3-1 ATS, and the only reason they aren’t 4-0 is because the Florida State game carried a ridiculous 18.5-point spread.

Mississippi State hasn’t really proven itself, even with two SEC wins. South Carolina doesn’t look any better than last season, and Missouri is an iffy road team. The Bulldogs are improved, but it doesn’t look like they’ve caught up with Alabama. The teams have a common opponent in South Carolina. Mississippi State fell behind early before a second-half comeback; Alabama blew the Gamecocks out from the beginning.

This rivalry has rarely been close. Alabama’s 12-4 ATS record against Mississippi State in this winning streak is no accident. The public believes in the trends; 61% are on the Tide.
