NCAAF Miami vs. Stanford: Predictions, How To Watch and Best Bets

After coming one score away from a national championship, Miami begins another campaign to revive its past glory. The Hurricanes have strangely never won the ACC title, 22 years after joining the league. They showed what they could be in making a run to the championship game, but they go into this Miami vs. Stanford matchup breaking in a new quarterback.

However, when that quarterback is former Duke quarterback Darian Mensah, it makes Miami’s job a lot easier. Mensah led Duke to the ACC title last season, and he’s got a juicy matchup in his first game in orange and green. Stanford already has a game under its belt, but the Cardinal’s defense didn’t look up to par against Hawai’i.

The Rainbow Warriors threw for more than 300 yards and nearly stole the opener, taking a 27-23 lead in the fourth quarter. Stanford ended up surviving, but its defense isn’t going to be able to stop Miami.

Here’s a look at this Miami vs. Stanford matchup to open the college football season.

Miami vs. Stanford Prediction

Best Bet: Over 48.5 (DraftKings, +100)

Stanford doesn’t need to do much to get this into over territory. The Cardinal lost 42-7 to Miami last year in South Florida, but their offense looks much improved from last season. Davis Warren completed 87% of his targeted passes against Hawai’i, and Miami’s defense isn’t the strength of this team.

The Hurricanes lost four defensive starters to the NFL, and they haven’t replaced them well enough to lock down opponents like they did last year. Miami allowed just 14.8 points per game, easily the best of Mario Cristobal’s tenure. Usually, his defenses allow closer to 24 points per game. That’s not a bad number; Miami’s defense was just unusually strong last year.

Stanford should have an easier time moving the football this season. Miami can obviously score and should do it early and often. As long as Mensah is on the same page with his weapons, the points should pile up on both sides. With DraftKings offering even money under a critical number, this is a strong play.

Miami should take care of business here. Stanford might have a game under its belt, but the Cardinal looked fairly shaky against Hawai’i. The Rainbow Warriors were only picked fourth in the Mountain West, and they broke in a lot of new pieces. Stanford still couldn’t stop Hawai’i and might well have lost that one if not for the offense.

While that says that the Cardinal have improved, they cannot keep up with Miami. The Hurricanes will run a more balanced offense than Hawai’i did, but Mensah should still get his yards. He’s throwing to better weapons than he had in Durham, and he goes into the season as a Heisman candidate.

This is the kind of game where a Heisman candidate puts up big numbers to get his season off to an eye-popping start. Miami has the national spotlight and a chance to do something with it. The Hurricanes shouldn’t have any real problems here.
