When Michigan and Duke agreed to play a neutral-site game in Washington, the organizers expected a good game between two quality programs. They didn’t expect anything of this magnitude.

Thanks to Houston’s loss at the start of the week, this matchup has now become No. 1 vs. No. 2. Both teams hoped when they scheduled this game that it would be a good test for them. Now it’s become a Final Four-like game five weeks before arriving at the Final Four.

This is going to be a case of strength vs. strength: these teams are as efficient as it gets at both ends of the floor. They’re also highly different in the way they approach the game. Michigan looks to overwhelm teams with fast, efficient offense, while Duke wants to make its opponents work and figure out its defense. This game has the potential to come down to the final minute.

Here’s a look at this top-tier matchup from the nation’s capital.

Michigan vs. Duke Prediction

Best Bet: Michigan -2.5 (-110, via FanDuel)

What this comes down to is simple: can Duke slow down Michigan’s potent offense? The Blue Devils are built around a rock-solid defensive effort that slows down opponents. Where Duke runs into problems is when a team can actually keep pace with it on offense. In 26 games, Duke has held 19 opponents to under 70 points.

But of the seven exceptions, Duke lost two of them outright and had three others decided by less than 10 points. When a team can shrug off Duke’s defense and match their shot totals, it becomes a lot harder for the Blue Devils to win.

Michigan’s offense has put up video game numbers this season. The Wolverines have been held under 74 points once all season. That came back in November, before the Wolverines really hit their stride. History says Duke isn’t going to be able to slow the Wolverines down enough to win.

Michigan vs. Duke Same Game Parlay

With the differing styles between the teams, matching the total to the team that’s most likely to win makes sense. If Michigan’s going to cover, the Wolverines’ quick tempo means the over is more likely to hit. If Duke covers or wins, it will be because the Blue Devils slowed the game down and frustrated Michigan’s attack.

Michigan’s success is more built around getting good looks from anywhere on the court. Stopping someone as talented as Cameron Boozer doesn’t fit the Wolverines’ model for victory. Michigan doesn’t have the ability to match up with Boozer down low, and it knows it. The Wolverines’ best chance is to outscore Duke on the other end and deal with Boozer’s offense as it happens.

As the Wolverines don’t create many turnovers, Boozer should get looks. That should help him get to this number.
