Warriors Sign Draymond Green to One-Year, $27.7 Million Extension

The Golden State Warriors have been one of the quietest teams around the NBA this offseason.

Despite their best efforts to acquire players like LeBron James, nothing has come to fruition. In fact, Golden State has primarily lost players this summer rather than adding to the roster.

But with that in mind, they did secure one of their most important pieces on Tuesday, signing Draymond Green to a one-year, $27.7 million contract extension that will keep him in Golden State for at least another season.

And despite the fact that he’s no longer at the peak of his powers, Green is still one of the Warriors’ best players and one of the best defenders in the NBA.

He’s also the emotional leader of the franchise and, for more than a decade, has been one of the league’s most impactful winning players. His value goes well beyond the box score. While his statistics aren’t eye-popping anymore, the Warriors simply wouldn’t have much chance to be competitive next season without him.

As Golden State continues trying to maximize what’s left of its championship window with Stephen Curry, keeping Green was paramount.

Rather than committing to another lengthy deal given his age, it was a smart move by the Warriors to lock him into a short-term extension. It allows the organization to continue navigating the future on a year-by-year basis while figuring out how to maximize the final years of Curry’s superstardom.

There’s still plenty of work left to do this offseason if Golden State wants to get back into the championship conversation. The roster still has holes, and the Warriors have yet to make the splash many expected them to make.

But bringing back Draymond Green was one move they simply couldn’t afford to miss.

With this new deal in place, the Warriors certainly aren’t the favorites to win the NBA championship, but as long as Curry and Green remain together, they’ll continue to be one of the more competitive and dangerous teams in the Western Conference.
