Trae Young Declines $49 Million Option, Becomes NBA Free Agent
As the NBA offseason continues to heat up with the draft approaching, free agency nearing, and trade rumors beginning to swirl, one of the first major dominoes fell Wednesday night.
According to Marc Spears, Trae Young is declining his $48.97 million player option for the 2026-27 season and will become an unrestricted free agent this summer.
It’s important to remember that this doesn’t necessarily mean Young is leaving Washington. In fact, the Wizards are still viewed as the frontrunner to retain him. But by declining the option, Young now has the opportunity to explore the market, negotiate with teams around the league, and ultimately determine where he wants to spend the next phase of his career.
And that creates plenty of intrigue.
How much is Young actually worth at this point in his career? He’s still one of the league’s premier playmakers and a four-time All-Star, but he’s also a smaller guard who has long faced questions about his defense. Does Washington have interest in giving him a max contract or something close to it? Will another team be willing to offer significant money to bring him in?
The decision also adds another layer to what is already one of the most fascinating situations in the NBA.
Remember, the Wizards traded for both Anthony Davis and Young last season. They also hold the No. 1 overall pick in next week’s NBA Draft. Washington suddenly has multiple avenues to accelerate its rebuild and potentially become a playoff contender in the Eastern Conference sooner rather than later.
From Young’s perspective, this is also a major vote of confidence in himself.
He’s walking away from nearly $49 million in guaranteed money after dealing with a knee injury last season, being traded away from the Atlanta Hawks, and seeing his perceived value around the league fluctuate over the last few years. There’s little doubt he’ll get paid by somebody. The bigger question is how much guaranteed long-term money is waiting for him on the open market.
The NBA Finals ended just a few days ago, but the offseason is already delivering headlines. And if this is only the first major domino, things are about to get very interesting.
