The NBA Offseason Is Here and Major Moves Are Coming

The New York Knicks just closed the book on the 2025-26 NBA season with a championship for the first time in 53 years. And that means the offseason is officially here, and things are going to start happening quickly.

Teams are already able to begin negotiating with their own impending free agents and discussing contract extensions. The 2026 NBA Draft is exactly one week away, with the first round set for Tuesday night. Trade rumors are only going to get louder from here, especially with superstar names like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jaylen Brown already being mentioned in offseason speculation.

That’s just how this part of the NBA calendar works. The games stop, but the league doesn’t.

Rebuilding teams are looking toward the future. Contenders are trying to make the move that gets them closer to a championship. Teams stuck somewhere in the middle have to decide whether to push forward, reset, or make a bigger swing than expected.

There are really three main ways for teams to improve their outlook, whether that’s in the short term or the long term: the draft, free agency, and trades. Over the next couple of weeks, all three of those levers are going to be pulled by teams around the league, and rosters will start to be reshaped in a major way.

It’s a time on the NBA calendar that doesn’t have much actual game action. The next real on-court basketball we’ll see will come in NBA Summer League in July. But that doesn’t make this stretch any less fascinating.

In a lot of ways, this is one of the most exciting times of the year. There’s speculation, movement, uncertainty, and storylines everywhere. That’s what makes the NBA so great. Even when there aren’t games being played, the league still finds a way to stay at the center of the conversation.
