Reigning Champion Knicks Sign Andre Drummond to Replace Mitchell Robinson
The New York Knicks knew this offseason would bring some level of roster turnover after winning the NBA championship.
With the financial implications of keeping a title team together and several key free agents to address, change was inevitable. While the Knicks were able to retain Landry Shamet and Jose Alvarado, they lost Mitchell Robinson to the Boston Celtics, creating an immediate need for a backup center behind Karl-Anthony Towns.
They’ve now addressed it.
The Knicks have agreed to a one-year deal with veteran center Andre Drummond, adding one of the NBA’s best rebounders to an already talented frontcourt.
Drummond isn’t a flawless player, but he brings many of the same qualities Robinson provided. He’s an elite rebounder, a physical presence in the paint, a strong screen setter and a veteran who understands his role. While he may not be the same caliber of rim protector or defender as Robinson, he gives New York another big body capable of matching up with larger frontcourts whenever Towns is off the floor.
That was clearly a priority.
These aren’t the moves that dominate headlines during free agency, but they’re often the ones that matter most for championship contenders. Finding reliable role players to fill specific needs is just as important as landing star talent, and that’s exactly what the Knicks have done here.
The roster will look slightly different next season with Drummond replacing Robinson, and the frontcourt rotation will have a different feel because of the different skill sets each player brings. But the goal hasn’t changed.
The Knicks are built to compete for another championship, and adding Drummond helps ensure they have the size, rebounding and physicality needed to make another deep playoff run.
New York may look a little different, but it’s still very much equipped to chase back-to-back NBA titles.
