Thunder vs. Rockets Prediction, Odds and Props for Oct. 31: Houston Takes Advantage of OKC Injuries

The Thunder vs. Rockets prediction for Saturday, October 31, features two Western Conference contenders whose outlooks have changed dramatically over the past week. The Oklahoma City Thunder travel to Houston with a severely depleted roster, while the Rockets are looking to bounce back from their first loss of the season.
What initially looked like a potential Western Conference Finals preview now feels like a matchup between teams heading in very different directions with all of the news about OKC's injuries.
Thunder vs. Rockets Odds
Houston enters Saturday's matchup as a 4.5-point home favorite despite playing on the second night of a back-to-back. Oklahoma City's extensive injury list has dramatically changed the outlook of this contest.
Here are the latest Thunder vs. Rockets odds:
- Spread: Thunder +4.5 (-111) / Rockets -4.5 (-109)
- Moneyline: Thunder (+142) / Rockets (-170)
- Total: Over 218.5 (-110) / Under 218.5 (-110)
Odds via DraftKings
The spread is surprisingly small considering the number of important players Oklahoma City is missing. Houston has a substantial talent advantage with the current available rosters, making the Rockets an attractive option to win the moneyline and cover.
The total of 218.5 points is also interesting given the offensive talent on both teams.
Oklahoma City Thunder Betting Trends
- Oklahoma City is 3-2 against the spread through its first five games.
- The under has hit in four of the Thunder's first five contests.
- Oklahoma City is averaging 108.2 points per game while allowing 104.6.
- The Thunder are shooting just 30.9% from beyond the arc.
- Oklahoma City went 24-17 against the spread on the road last regular season.
The Thunder initially looked like the best team in basketball, opening the season with convincing victories over San Antonio and Denver and poised to win a championship.
However, their outlook has changed dramatically following several significant injuries. Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace could potentially miss the remainder of the regular season, while Chet Holmgren is expected to be sidelined for at least eight to ten weeks. Alex Caruso is also dealing with an ankle injury.
That leaves Oklahoma City without three starters and one of its most important reserves. The Thunder managed to defeat Phoenix despite those absences, but their 120-96 loss against Dallas exposed the roster's limitations.
Oklahoma City has been excellent defensively, but maintaining that standard without so many elite defenders will be difficult. The offense has also struggled with perimeter shooting, creating additional pressure on back-to-back MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
Houston Rockets Betting Trends
- Houston started the season 5-0 against the spread before its loss to Dallas.
- The over hit in four of Houston's first five games.
- The Rockets are averaging 123 points per game while allowing 108.8.
- Houston is shooting 51.7% from the floor and 40.4% from three-point range.
- The over has hit in six of Houston's last seven home games entering this matchup.
Houston has been one of the NBA's most impressive teams early in the season, winning five consecutive games before suffering its first loss against Dallas. Kevin Durant gives the Rockets one of the greatest scorers in basketball, while Alperen Sengun and Amen Thompson provide additional offensive versatility.
The Rockets have been particularly impressive offensively, averaging 123 points per game through their undefeated start. That production has also translated into betting success, with Houston covering its first five spreads.
The biggest concern entering Saturday is the schedule. Houston is playing on consecutive nights, and several players have been dealing with injuries. Still, the Rockets have significantly more available talent than Oklahoma City, particularly with the Thunder's rotation stretched so thin.
Thunder vs. Rockets Prediction: Houston -4.5 (-109)
My favorite Thunder vs. Rockets prediction is Houston covering the 4.5-point spread at -109 on most sports betting sites. Just a week ago, this would have been one of the most anticipated games of the early NBA season.
Oklahoma City looked like the best team in basketball after beating San Antonio and Denver, while Houston was establishing itself as another legitimate championship contender.
But everything has changed for the Thunder. Losing Williams, Wallace and Holmgren for extended periods is devastating. Add Caruso's absence, and Oklahoma City is missing four of its most important defensive players.
The Thunder have been forced to rely heavily on two-way players and inexperienced contributors. They even signed Ochai Agbaji to provide additional depth.
That simply isn't sustainable against elite competition. Gilgeous-Alexander is still one of the best players in basketball, and he's capable of keeping Oklahoma City competitive almost single-handedly.
However, Houston has enough defensive personnel to make his life difficult while also featuring Durant and several other talented offensive players. The Rockets are dealing with injuries of their own and playing on the second night of a back-to-back, which creates some uncertainty.
But I believe the talent gap is too significant to ignore. I also like the over at 218.5 points. Houston has been excellent offensively, and Oklahoma City's depleted defense should create additional scoring opportunities. Meanwhile, Gilgeous-Alexander can generate enough offense to keep the Thunder contributing to the total. Houston should win comfortably enough to cover.
Best Bet: Houston Rockets -4.5 (-109 via FanDuel)
Final Prediction: Rockets 119, Thunder 107

Beyond Houston covering the spread, there are three player props worth considering in Saturday's matchup.
- Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Over 29.5 Points (-120 via BetMGM): Houston has excellent perimeter defenders who can make life difficult for Gilgeous-Alexander, but Oklahoma City's injuries have created a situation where he has to carry an enormous offensive burden. With Williams, Wallace and Holmgren sidelined, the Thunder simply don't have enough established scoring options. If Oklahoma City wants any chance of competing, Gilgeous-Alexander will need to deliver a massive performance. I expect him to be aggressive and surpass 30 points.
- Alperen Sengun Over 8.5 Rebounds (-110 via BetMGM): Sengun is one of Houston's most important rebounders, and this matchup should create opportunities for him to dominate the glass if he's cleared to play. Oklahoma City's frontcourt has been significantly weakened by Holmgren's absence, leaving the Thunder vulnerable inside. Houston already relies heavily on Sengun to secure rebounds, and his role should be especially important against a depleted opponent. Assuming his back allows him to handle his normal workload, I like him to grab at least nine rebounds.
- Amen Thompson Over 0.5 Made Three-Pointers (+170 via BetMGM): Thompson isn't a particularly good three-point shooter, but that's exactly what makes this prop interesting. Oklahoma City has historically been comfortable leaving poor perimeter shooters open, often using its center to help defensively rather than contesting those attempts. Thompson could find himself with several wide-open opportunities from beyond the arc. If he attempts three or four threes, he only needs one to fall. At +170 on most sports betting apps, I like the value despite his inconsistent shooting.
