Nikola Jokic Delays Nuggets Extension for Bigger Deal Next Summer
The Denver Nuggets are headlined by Nikola Jokic, who, even at this stage in his career, has a legitimate case for being the best basketball player in the world.
And while he appears very happy in Denver, where he’s spent his entire career and won the NBA championship in 2023, he is eligible for a supermax extension this offseason.
It would be easy to assume Jokic would simply sign that deal now while he’s eligible. Instead, it appears he’s going to wait until after the upcoming season.
In some cases, that could signal that a player is open to change, exploring options or potentially leaving the franchise. But with Jokic, this seems much simpler than that.
He’s waiting until next summer, when he will be eligible for an even larger deal.
And while that might sound concerning to Nuggets fans at first, it shouldn’t be. After a FIBA qualifying matchup earlier this week, Jokic expressed that he sees his future in Denver and strongly indicated that he intends to sign the extension next year.
"My idea and my wish is to stay in Denver," Jokic said. "I will most probably sign next summer. The decision is strictly business-oriented. My wish is to stay and play for Denver the rest of my career. It's on them if they want me."
That’s the key part of this story.
This doesn’t appear to be a superstar creating leverage or hinting at a possible exit. It’s about waiting and maximizing the value of what should eventually become another long-term commitment to the Nuggets.
For Denver, there doesn’t need to be any panic. The expectation remains that Jokic will eventually sign the long-term extension and continue building the rest of his career with the franchise that drafted him.
The headlines will naturally gravitate toward the superstar not signing the extension as soon as he’s eligible.
But there’s more to the story. All signs still point toward Jokic remaining in Denver long-term.
