As the second round of the 2026 NBA Draft came to a conclusion, the expectation was that most of the chatter around the league would be about the incoming rookies and which teams had the most successful draft.

Instead, the NBA offseason delivered another major twist.

As Wednesday night came to a close, reports surfaced that the Charlotte Hornets were fielding offers for LaMelo Ball. Then early Thursday morning, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that Ball had been traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The deal sends Ball to Minnesota in a package primarily built around Naz Reid and future draft capital, including an unprotected first-round pick and multiple first-round pick swaps.

Now, both teams are going to look incredibly different next season.

For Charlotte, this ends the Ball era. He was the face of the franchise and one of the most exciting young guards in the league when healthy, but the Hornets are now clearly moving in a different direction. After finishing last season strong, Charlotte will now build around Brandon Miller, Kon Knueppel and its younger core, with more future assets to potentially leverage in another move.

That’s what makes this so interesting for the Hornets. This may not be the final version of the roster.

For Minnesota, this is a hard pivot.

The Timberwolves traded Julius Randle last week and have now acquired Ball, giving them a completely new look around the rest of their core. This is a team that has gone deep in the playoffs for three straight seasons, but clearly felt it needed a different offensive engine to keep pushing toward a championship.

These are the types of moves that send shockwaves across the NBA. One big trade changes two rosters, impacts the market and can lead to even more movement around the league.

But for now, the headline is simple.

LaMelo Ball is now a member of the Minnesota Timberwolves.
