Knicks End 53-Year Championship Drought, Capture 2026 NBA Title

The 53-year wait is officially over.

The New York Knicks had not been at the mountaintop as NBA champions since 1973, but that all changed on Saturday night in San Antonio. The Knicks won Game 5 with yet another clutch victory late in the game, showing their poise and experience against a young Spurs team to hoist the Larry O'Brien Trophy.

While it wasn't at Madison Square Garden in front of their own crowd, Knicks fans won't care. The city of New York will be celebrating in the streets from afar, because this is the moment generations of fans have been waiting for. It's one of the most passionate fanbases in all of sports, and they got to enjoy a 16-3 playoff run to a championship.

This will go down as one of the most impressive championships in league history.

That's especially true given what the Knicks had gone through since that last title. They had the Patrick Ewing era, the 1994 Finals loss, the 1999 Cinderella run, failed superstar pursuits, many losing seasons, national ridicule, and for decades they were more famous for their dysfunction than their success.

But now, they're NBA champions.

This validates the risk they took signing Jalen Brunson when he was a rising star, but wasn't necessarily a guaranteed superstar-level player. At the time, there were real questions about whether he could be the best player on a championship team. Now, not only has he answered those questions, but he's done so as the NBA Finals MVP.

The Knicks were also aggressive in their trades for OG Anunoby, Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges. This team was all about taking swings. This wasn't a homegrown team that slowly built itself over time. This was a team carefully crafted and architected by the front office, with the goal of getting to this exact point. New York spent much of its draft capital to win now, and it worked.

And now they're at the very top of it all.

The Knicks winning is also good for the sport. They're a huge market with an incredible fan base, and when the New York Knicks are good, the NBA is in a good spot. When they're contenders, the league feels bigger. When they're champions, it becomes one of the biggest stories in sports.

The Spurs are still going to be just fine. Wembanyama remains one of the most talented young players the league has ever seen, Dylan Harper looks every bit the part of a future star, and this team arrived on the NBA Finals stage much sooner than most expected.

The Knicks were the veteran group built to win right now, while the Spurs were the young team trying to accelerate its timeline. They came up short, but this feels much more like the beginning of something than the end. If anything, this playoff run showed that San Antonio’s championship window may just be opening.

They have plenty of assets to continue improving this roster. This truly may be the worst Spurs team we see for for the next half-decade.

The 2026 NBA Draft is just 10 days away, trades will start happening soon, free agency will kick off, and we will start looking ahead to the 2026-27 season soon. The offseason is officially underway.

But for now, it's official. The New York Knicks are 2026 NBA champions, and Jalen Brunson is NBA Finals MVP. It took longer than 50 years for them to do it again, but it was all worth it.
