Kentavious Caldwell-Pope Opt-In Gives Grizzlies Offseason Clarity

There will be no shortage of NBA headlines next week, with the NBA Draft taking place Tuesday and Wednesday, major trades expected before and during the event, and free agency on the horizon.

But one of the first smaller dominoes of the NBA offseason fell Wednesday, as Kentavious Caldwell-Pope opted into his $21.6 million player option with the Memphis Grizzlies.

On the surface, this isn’t the type of move that shakes up the league. Caldwell-Pope is no longer a prominent player in the NBA, and the Grizzlies are clearly in the middle of a retool after moving Desmond Bane and landing multiple future assets in return.

Still, this is notable for Memphis.

The Grizzlies have the No. 3 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft and are positioned to add a new face of the franchise on Tuesday night. They’re looking toward the future, but Caldwell-Pope’s contract now becomes part of their present. And $21.6 million is not a small number for a veteran role player at this stage of his career.

That changes the cap sheet. It changes what Memphis can realistically do in free agency. And if the Grizzlies look to the trade market, Caldwell-Pope’s salary could potentially be used as a larger matching contract in a future deal.

That’s where this becomes interesting.

For Memphis, this opt-in gives the front office clarity. They know Caldwell-Pope is on the books, they know the number, and they can plan accordingly heading into one of the most important weeks of the offseason.

But it also leaves the Grizzlies with a fairly expensive veteran contract for a player who may or may not be part of their long-term vision.

That doesn’t make the decision bad news. It just makes it relevant.

Memphis is entering a new phase, and Caldwell-Pope’s opt-in is another reminder that even smaller offseason moves can shape what a team is able to do next.
