Cavaliers Sign Mario Hezonja for Long-Awaited NBA Return

It’s not a regular occurrence, but from time to time, a player will leave the NBA for opportunities overseas and ultimately make his way back to the league. Mario Hezonja is the latest example, officially returning after spending the past six seasons playing internationally.

The Cleveland Cavaliers announced Friday that they signed the 31-year-old forward, bringing the former No. 5 overall pick back to the NBA for the first time since the 2019-20 season. Hezonja reportedly agreed to a one-year, $2.8 million contract.

Hezonja has been productive during his time away from the league, particularly across his past four seasons with Real Madrid. He helped the club win the 2023 EuroLeague championship and was named MVP of Spain’s Liga Endesa for the 2025-26 season after averaging 17.5 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists during the regular season.

While that success doesn’t guarantee his game will translate immediately, there’s no question Hezonja is a more mature, experienced and well-rounded player than he was during his first NBA stint. He previously averaged 6.9 points across five seasons with the Orlando Magic, New York Knicks and Portland Trail Blazers.

For Cleveland, this is the type of low-risk move that could provide real value. Hezonja is a 6-foot-8 forward with the physical profile to play multiple positions, space the floor and bring some scoring punch to the Cavaliers’ second unit.

Cleveland doesn’t need him to become a star or reproduce everything he accomplished with Real Madrid. If Hezonja can become a reliable rotation piece on such an affordable contract, the upside will be significantly greater than the risk.

It will be interesting to see how his return pans out, but this is a quality move for a Cavaliers team hoping to make another deep playoff run. Hezonja earned a second NBA opportunity overseas, and Cleveland is giving him the chance to make the most of it.
