76ers Enter LeBron James Mix After Jaylen Brown Trade
The Philadelphia 76ers already made one of the biggest moves of the offseason by trading for Jaylen Brown.
That move sets them up for a star-studded starting lineup that includes Brown, Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe. But depending on how things play out, a fifth star could enter the mix in Philadelphia.
LeBron James is still deciding which team he wants to sign with for the upcoming season after officially ending his stint with the Los Angeles Lakers. With that in mind, the Sixers reportedly have interest in James and have reached out to his camp to see if there is a way to make something happen.
That by no means indicates that Philadelphia is the favorite to land him. But there is at least interest on the Sixers’ side, and they’d clearly like to make it happen.
If they did, Philadelphia would suddenly have five players in the starting lineup with NBA All-Star upside. If healthy, that would be the best starting lineup in the entire NBA. The Sixers would still need to worry about bench depth, but they’ve already done a strong job addressing that in free agency.
At this point, it comes down to whether Philadelphia can sell James on the core he’d get to play alongside and whether the money makes sense. There have been reports that James could be willing to take a very small deal to join the right team, but it’s still unclear exactly what that means.
For all intents and purposes, though, Philadelphia is being aggressive.
The Sixers already landed Brown. Now they’re at least exploring the possibility of adding James, too. That’s swinging for the fences, and if they pull it off, Philadelphia could enter next season with the best starting lineup in basketball.
