NBA Eastern Conference Second-Round Series Odds
No. 1 Boston Celtics vs. No. 4 Cleveland Cavaliers
Given the opponent, Cleveland winning its first-round series without Jarrett Allen (ribs) was impressive. Unlike Boston, without Kristaps Porziņģis (calf) against a depleted Heat team, Orlando is one of the most youthfully talented teams across the league.
Following the Game 7 clincher, Cavaliers wing Donovan Mitchell has produced 30 points in nearly half his career playoff games. That total of 23 is one shy of Celtics star Jayson Tatum for ninth among active players.
But outside of Mitchell’s dominance in Games 6 and 7, the Cavs scored barely scratched out one point per possession during their seven games against the Magic. That was the second-least efficient performance in the first round, ahead of the Pelicans.
Attaining a higher offensive output won’t be any easier in this series. Boston showcases many elite defenders to throw at Mitchell. In turn, Darius Garland, whose first-round scoring decline resulted in 14.9 points per game versus Orlando, must step up. But squaring off against Jrue Holiday and the Celtics’ ball-pressure-centric defense is an arduous task (and then some).

No. 2 New York Knicks vs. No. 6 Indiana Pacers
Jalen Brunson and Tyrese Haliburton, teammates on the Eastern Conference All-Star squad a few months ago, square off as opponents with a trip to the conference finals on the line. Brunson, who will likely finish as a top-five finisher on the MVP ballot, is the player in NBA playoff history with four straight games of 39-plus points. He ranks alongside Michael Jordan (1990 and 1993), Bernard King (1984), and Jerry West (six straight in 1965) as the lone players to accomplish this feat.
Moreover, Brunson has tallied the highest assist rate in the playoffs among players, averaging at least 35 minutes per game. Haliburton ranks fifth in that department, ranking behind Brunson, Luka Doncic, Nikola Jokic, and LeBron James.
These teams nearly had identical defensive ratings during the playoffs. Nevertheless, the Pacers benefited from a heavy dose of injury luck. Not only did two-time MVP Giannis Antentokoumpo (calf) miss the entire series, but star point guard Damian Lillard (Achilles) also missed Games 4 and 5 while playing hobbled in the finale.
For reference, Indiana finished with a bottom-five defensive rating in the regular season. Oddsmakers clearly have more respect for the Brunson-led Knicks.

No. 1 Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Dallas Mavericks
Oklahoma City won the regular-season series 3-1, and the Thunder have defeated the Mavericks in five of the last seven meetings during the last two seasons. The superstar matchup between Luka Doncic and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is among the most underrated headlines thus far, especially considering OKC’s emergence after beginning the season as a longshot to win the title.

No. 2 Denver Nuggets vs. No. 3 Minnesota Timberwolves
In Minnesota’s Game 1 upset victory, the storyline was Anthony Edwards, tallying 43 points while shooting 17-of-29 (58.6%) from the field.
Nikola Jokić, the Nuggets’ superstar, finished with nine assists despite having 12 potential assists in the game. Rather than having the offense run through Jokić like normal, the Wolves’ defense was structured around forcing Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon to beat them.
When Denver ran ball-screen action with Jokić and Murray, Minnesota’s help defender rarely came off Jokic to disrupt Murray. Minnesota center Rudy Gobert also sagged off Gordon to protect the paint. Will Denver successfully adjust on Monday night?
Below are the upcoming odds for Game 2 in the Mile High City. The spread opened at Nuggets -5.5, but it’s risen to -6/6.5 at most shops, with Gobert (personal) listed as questionable.
Game 2 Odds:
All times Eastern Standard Time
Game 2: Timberwolves at Nuggets; Monday, May 6 (9 p.m., TNT)
