As the NBA calendar pushes deeper into March, the standings in both conferences are beginning to settle into recognizable tiers. Seeding will still shift over the final few weeks of the regular season, but the larger picture is becoming clearer. We’re starting to see where the lines are forming between playoff locks, play-in contenders, and teams likely headed for the lottery.

In today’s NBA, the top ten teams in each conference reach the postseason in some form. Seeds one through six automatically qualify for the playoffs, while teams seven through ten compete in the play-in tournament for the final two spots in the bracket.

In the Eastern Conference, the race for those final postseason spots is already starting to take shape.

  1. Pistons — 45-17

  2. Celtics — 42-21

  3. Knicks — 41-23

  4. Cavaliers — 39-24

  5. Raptors — 35-27

  6. Magic — 34-28

  7. Heat — 35-29

  8. 76ers — 34-29

  9. Hawks — 33-31

  10. Hornets — 32-32

  11. Bucks — 27-35

  12. Bulls — 26-37

  13. Wizards — 16-46

  14. Nets — 16-47

  15. Pacers — 15-48

The Charlotte Hornets currently sit in the No. 10 spot at 32-32 and have been playing some of their best basketball of the season. Just as important, they are four games ahead of the No. 11 seed Milwaukee Bucks. With Milwaukee sitting at only 27 wins on the season, it would take a major late push for the Bucks to erase that gap over the final twenty games. It is not impossible, but that separation is starting to feel significant.

At the top of the East, the Detroit Pistons, Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, and Cleveland Cavaliers have formed a clear top four. None of them are mathematically locked into a top six seed yet, but their positioning makes it very likely they will avoid the play-in tournament.

Behind them sits the most competitive tier in the conference. The Toronto Raptors, Orlando Magic, Miami Heat, and Philadelphia 76ers are all clustered together and battling for the fifth and sixth seeds. Only two of those four teams will secure guaranteed playoff spots, while the other two will be forced into the play-in tournament.

The final tier of Eastern postseason hopefuls appears to be the Atlanta Hawks and Charlotte Hornets, currently sitting in ninth and tenth. Both teams are several games behind the sixth seed, which means climbing into the guaranteed playoff bracket is still possible but increasingly unlikely. Their more realistic path appears to be through the play-in.

The Western Conference picture is even more defined.

  1. Thunder — 50-15

  2. Spurs — 46-17

  3. Rockets — 39-23

  4. Timberwolves — 40-24

  5. Nuggets — 39-25

  6. Lakers — 38-25

  7. Suns — 36-27

  8. Warriors — 32-31

  9. Clippers — 31-32

  10. Trail Blazers — 30-34

  11. Grizzlies — 23-39

  12. Mavericks — 21-42

  13. Pelicans — 20-45

  14. Jazz — 19-45

  15. Kings — 14-50

The Portland Trail Blazers currently hold the No. 10 seed, while the Memphis Grizzlies sit in eleventh place. Six games separate those two teams, which strongly suggests the West already knows which ten teams will reach the postseason.

Within that group, clear tiers are forming.

At the top are the Oklahoma City Thunder, San Antonio Spurs, Houston Rockets, and Minnesota Timberwolves. All four teams have built meaningful separation from the rest of the conference and are in strong position to secure guaranteed playoff spots.

Behind them sits a smaller but important tier. The Denver Nuggets, Los Angeles Lakers, and Phoenix Suns are clustered around the fifth through seventh seeds. Two of those teams will ultimately claim the final guaranteed playoff spots, while the third will likely enter the play-in tournament as the highest seed and have two chances to secure a postseason berth.

After that, there is another noticeable drop in the standings. The Golden State Warriors sit four games behind the Suns, and the LA Clippers are five games back. Along with the Trail Blazers, those teams make up the final tier of Western postseason teams.

Barring a major late surge or collapse, those clubs are highly likely to occupy the eighth through tenth seeds and compete in the play-in tournament.

The games still matter and seeding will continue to shift over the final stretch of the season. But as the league moves deeper into March, the broader structure of the playoff race is starting to reveal itself. The contenders are separating, the play-in field is taking shape, and the line between postseason teams and lottery teams is becoming increasingly clear.
