The first thing to know is that the in-season tournament has been integrated into the regular season schedule. To begin with, the NBA has drawn each team into a five-team group based on last season’s standings and within their own conference. Here are the groups:

NBA in-season tournament rules call for each team to play two games against the others in its group. The winners of each group, along with the top second-place team from each conference, advance to the knockout stage.
The knockout stage will pit these teams in a single-elimination tournament. The semifinals and finals take place in Las Vegas on Dec. 7 and Dec. 9, respectively.
Thus, team health over the course of the next month, along with the strength of each team’s respective group, will play a large part in determining the champion that emerges.
Bettors can also wager on the in-season tournament MVP. Obviously, the winner will presumably come from the winning team.
