Another Warriors Title?

Despite winning three of four championships between 2015-2018, Stephen Curry seemed more emotional about his 2022 win. A team that was considered past their prime and had to fight and claw captured the NBA title over young and upstart Boston.

Not atypical of defending champions, the Warriors are +500 favorites at Caesars, +550 at BetMGM and +600 co-favorites at DraftKings Sportsbook.

While no blockbuster names are on the table for free agency, Golden State does have to secure or replace key contributors to this title run, namely Otto Porter Jr. and Gary Payton II. Rotational starter Kevon Looney is also due for a contract, but is less likely to re-sign should a team view him as a valuable center.

However, the core of Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green will be 35, 33, and 33, respectively this upcoming season. They did it this year, but can they do it again in a reloaded and possibly stronger Western Conference in 2023?

Opposition Gets Healthier In The West

The biggest asset returning in 2023 is Kawhi Leonard, who missed the entire 2021-22 season with a torn ACL. A proven champion and superteam killer, Leonard vaults the Clippers into instant contention, as reflected by their +600 co-favorite status at DraftKings; their best odds come available at FanDuel, where they are +850. Not much is lost from the 2022 team in L.A., but the allure of Leonard could attract a big-name free agent or multiple key role players.

The Phoenix Suns (+900) bring back their two mainstays, Devin Booker and Chris Paul, but have work to do in order to return key players like DeAndre Ayton and Bismack Biyombo. Ultimately, the 2021 NBA Finals run for Phoenix is looking more like a one-off, though the Suns remained competitive in the 2021-22 regular season. CP3 was hurt at the end of their Playoff run this past season and has a full offseason to get right.

Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks (+1500) was also hindered by injury throughout much of the postseason. The Western Conference runners-up were clearly outclassed by Golden State, but landing a star free agent to pair with Luka would put them right back in the mix.

The Fountain Of Youth

Disappointing as the outcome may have been for the Celtics, this team just runs it back this coming season. No contributors to the Finals run are due for free agency and their core players are just coming into their prime. It’s no surprise that the Celtics are the favorites to win the title out of the East at BetMGM, priced at +650.

Jayson Tatum set a new NBA postseason record for turnovers and Boston as a whole was killed by them all Finals long. In Game 6, they turned the ball over 22 times, ultimately leading to their defeat. Was it the yips? Just plain carelessness? Either one is easily solved by another offseason together.

Tatum is among the favorites for next year’s NBA MVP odds. The tandem of him and Jaylon Brown has been and will continue to be a problem for the rest of the league for many years to come.

Addition By Subtraction?

Despite voicing his desire to re-sign with the Nets, Kyrie Irving could hit free agency this summer. The Nets are reportedly unwilling to give Irving a long-term deal (likely due to his unvaccinated absence last season), which could push him to another organization.

Regardless of the impending Irving free agency, the Nets are co-favorites to win the title at DraftKings (+600) in NBA Finals odds, and just a shade behind Boston at BetMGM (+700).

Multiple other aging role players are set for free agency, including Blake Griffin, Patty Mills, and Andre Drummond.

Do bettors see Brooklyn’s exit as a result of limited games playing together? Because they ran into the eventual-Eastern Conference champions? Their odds will be one to monitor this coming offseason.
