Evaluating NBA Finals MVP Odds
Per the odds board above, the best price on Tatum to win 2023 NBA Finals MVP is +160. The four-time All-Star entered the NBA postseason at +550 — good for the second-shortest price tag. Giannis Antetokoumpo initially paced the market before the Heat notched a historic series upset over the Bucks.
In fact, Tatum notched a momentous performance of his own, tallying 51 points against the 76ers on Sunday. It was the most individual points ever recorded in a Game 7 in NBA playoffs history.
However, bettors may argue that the aforementioned Jokic possesses more value at +275. That’s because Tatum will have some competition via fellow Celtic Jaylen Brown, who averaged 23.5 points, 7.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists in the 2022 NBA Finals. The betting odds certainly reflect that.
Meanwhile, LeBron James and Anthony Davis find themselves near the top of the odds board as well. Davis has arguably been the most impactful player in the postseason, manufacturing 21.2 points, along with a playoff-high 14.1 rebounds and 3.3 blocks, per contest. But his defensive presence will come more into play against Jokic than either of the remaining teams in the East — should the Lakers advance.
In regards to series odds, Boston is the clear-cut favorite (-525) to advance to their second consecutive NBA finals. Last season, Tatum & Co. fell to the Warriors in six games, dropping three straight to wrap things up.
Keep in mind, teams priced at -400 or greater to win the series in either the conference or NBA finals are 28-2 over the last 35 years. The losses? Most recently, it was the James-led Cavaliers (-700) against Dwight Howard and the Magic in 2009, then the Lakers (-700) versus the Pistons in 2004.
Even if Jimmy Butler and the Heat (+400) pull off another stunner, they would represent hefty underdogs in the finals.
