Joey Chestnut Reigns King

Don’t be fooled by what may be perceived to be a “valuable” 10-1 wager. Chestnut’s 14 crowns in the hot dog eating contest are more than double as many as Japan’s Takeru Kobayashi, the next-most triumphant participant. Kobayashi claimed six consecutive titles (2001-06) before Chestnut took home the crown the following July 4, gobbling down 66 hot dogs in a mere 12 minutes. Chestnut has won every year since then — with the exception of Matt Stonie’s upset victory in 2015.

Can Chestnut Top His Record-Setting Figure?

Last year, the ingesting machine consumed a personal-best 76 hot dogs in Nathan’s contest. The 2021 total was set at O/U 73.5, so this betting market has been adjusted a bit as a result.

Miki Sudo A Bigger Favorite Than Chestnut

This market could be a surprise to non-hot dog eating contest fanatics, but the seven-time defending-champion also broke her own record by inhaling 48 hot dogs in 10 minutes two years ago. She didn’t compete in 2021 because of her pregnancy, allowing Michelle Lesco to earn the title. Lesco tallied 30 3/4 hot dogs while none of her competition was able to devour more than 24 franks.

Sudo Requires More Sizable Adjustment

Sudo’s total sat at O/U 40.5 in 2020, and the over was juiced to -150. So once again, this market a little more bullish on Sudo’s potential than for Chestnut — albeit the hefty vig towards the under.

Pro Bettor’s Hot Dog Eating Contest Wagers

Yes, there are professional sports bettors who wager on the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. Chris Kelly is one of them, and the reasoning behind his bet is below.

For starters, Sudo’s total opened way too high. She is the queen of competitive eating, but asking her to break her world record this year is a tall task. As Eli mentioned, she originally did so in 2020 and much has changed since then. Let’s examine:

  • She broke that record during COVID-19, as the event took place inside — in perfect conditions. We’re back outside at Coney Island in front of a full crowd. Weather doesn’t look too hot (84 degrees), but humidity is always a factor in the hot dog eating contest.
  • What will the effect of having a baby have on her prep work? It’s hard to say, but Sudo is so much better than anyone else in the Women’s division that she could bring her “C” game and win the title.
  • She injured her left hand and can’t use it normally, so she’ll be using mainly one hand which will slow her down in some form — even if it’s only a small consequence.
  • Sudo posted a video in February, completing a practice round of O/U 33.5 hot dogs. I’ll guarantee you that she’s done more in her most recent prep, but that total certainly catches your eye.

Hot Dog Eating Contest Betting Conclusions

As referenced above, Sudo can be off her game and still win this contest going away. She’s that much better than the competition. But given everything that’s shifted in two short years, I don’t see her getting back to her 2020 total (48). I have her in the 40-45 range on eat day. I’d endorse anything under 49.5 as a strong play but would bet this down to under 45.5 — should the odds head in that direction.
