2023 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest Odds, Bets, TV Schedule

Hot Dog Odds

Traditionally on July 4, the average American joins his friends and family for a cookout. It typically involves frankfurters — served hot in a long, soft roll and covered in various condiments. But there are others who prefer to watch the pros consume them in a hyper-aggressive manner at the annual Nathan’s Hog Dog Eating Contest. With that in mind, let’s dig into the hot dog odds at hand.

Hot Dog Odds Strategy

There are few professional sports bettors who bet the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. Chris Kelly represents one of them, and he’s kind enough to share his insight with TheLines for the event. The 15-time men’s champ Joey Chestnut is the clear-cut headliner, yet Kelly’s wagers aren’t geared towards his direction.

First up is Miki Sudo, who holds the women’s world record of cramming down 48.5 Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs in 10 minutes. Sudo won her eighth title on July 4, 2022, guzzling 42 hot dogs and buns. Despite fading her on the most recent Independence Day, Kelly is reversing course this time around.

“She’s not fresh off having a baby, her hand is healed (both keys to last year’s handicap), and she’s way less vocal with the media about getting to 50,” Kelly said. “If you remember last year, she was dropping 50 [hot dogs] at practice and was vocal about her desire to get to that number while breaking the record again. It was just never going to happen given all she was dealing with, and the under cruised [because of that].

“This year, I think she’s lying in the weeds, saying very little, consuming mid-40s in every practice by all accounts, and is set to have a great day on the fourth.”

You can fire away on Sudo’s total below, along with participating in TheLines’ free hot dog betting contest, in which the winner receives a $50 Amazon gift card. This market is updated as of July 3.

Sudo’s Well-Known Alliance

Don’t forget about Nick Wehry, Sudo’s fiancée who sits No. 4 in the latest Major League Eating (MLE) rankings. Kelly was successful in betting Wehry’s unders a year ago, as sportsbooks set Wehry’s total with the expectation that he would continue to improve.

Over the last five years, Wehry’s hot dog total has closed at 31, 36, 39.5, 44, and 41. Wehry took a step back in 2022 — like almost every other contestant. Kelly went on to note the significant factors that go into this handicap, including:

  • Wehry stringing together a career season in MLE
  • Capacity for food and speed of eating are at all-time highs
  • Began prepping for contest in January vs. March/April

On February 3, Wehry surprisingly defeated the aforementioned Chestnut to win the Wonderful Pistachios Get Crackin’ championship, delivering a world record by ingesting 188 pistachios in a mere eight minutes. You can join Kelly in betting Wehry’s total number of hot dogs devoured below.

Kelly stated that he would bet Wehry’s total up to 48.5. Similar to the market above, the following odds are as of July 3. Moreover, Kelly has placed a wager on Wehry to out-eat Sudo.

Enter the 31-year-old, 225-pound Giddeon Oji, the model for consistency when it comes to polishing off a myriad of franks. Below are Oji’s totals since he started pursuing competitive eating while joining the customary hot dog contest in the process. From 2016-21, he landed somewhere between 34 to 38 hot dogs consumed:

  • 2015: 19
  • 2016: 38
  • 2017: 36
  • 2018: 37.5
  • 2019: 34
  • 2020: Didn’t compete
  • 2021: 37.75
  • 2022: 29
  • 2023 Qualifier: 35

According to Kelly, numbers tend to be higher in qualifiers than what they are on “game day.” Plus, Oji has never tallied over 40 hot dogs in this contest despite some operators opening his total at 41.5 and 40.5, respectively.

Unsurprisingly, Kelly already has positions on Oji under 41.5, 40.5, and 39.5. He’d still play Oji down to 38.5 and even at 36.5 — albeit lowering the stakes if the market dips further than 38.5 come Tuesday morning.
