Wide Open Board, Wide Open Value?

The book is wide open on this weekend’s race. Ryan Blaney and Kyle Larson are co-favorites (+1000) at both DraftKings Sportsbook and FanDuel Sportsbook. That’s double the typical price we’ve seen this season, with Larson being a frequent favorite around 4-1 or 9-2 odds. However, you have nine drivers between 10-1 and 15-1 this weekend.

Why? Atlanta Motor Speedway was completely renovated and is a brand-new track since last July. According to the Racing News article, Atlanta “has been drastically changed.” If you thought the odds were a crap shoot, that’s because they are. The renovations include higher banks of 28º and a narrower racing surface from 55 feet to 40 feet.

Another wrench in the cogs is that NASCAR opted to run the Superspeedway package in their cars this weekend (increased horsepower and, as a result, speed). That means the track will run hotter and faster, but is much narrower than tracks like Daytona.

Blaney graces the top of the board because he’s a driver who excels at both Superspeedways and 1.5-mile tracks– a unique attribute in drivers, per FanDuel’s Jim Sannes.

“[Blaney] is good on both Superspeedways and 1.5-mile tracks. Not a ton of guys can say that. So that’d be my guess as to why he got a ton of steam.”

He won last year’s edition of the race, so is that something to consider here?

“All Atlanta history is irrelevant at this point,” Sannes makes clear.

Implications of the Superspeedway package at Atlanta

If you’re thinking that running hotter and faster on a narrower course sounds like a recipe for more wrecks, you’re likely onto something.

“It’ll likely cause more wrecks because they’ll be driving in packs,” Sannes said in response to concerns over increased chances for wrecks. “So, for me, I’m basically staying away from all bets until after practice Friday night because I have no feel for, A) which races to input [in my model] and B) how much variance to bake in.”

“…nobody knows how it will race. They’re running the Superspeedway package this week because they think it’ll run like Daytona or Talladega… but it’s also just a 1.5-mile track and very narrow. So, it’s all just a guessing game.”

How I’m betting NASCAR at Atlanta

In short, I’m not. This is a completely clean slate with so many variables, I’m just sitting back and enjoying this race. If you’re going to toe the line this weekend, I’d heed Jim’s advice and wait until all of the practice runs are complete Friday night.
