Preakness Stakes 2024: Mugatu Horse Racing Profile
Mugatu is an experienced horse and one of the most well-run in the 2024 Preakness field. At one point, his team was entering Mugatu in races every two weeks. The result? One lone win and just five times on the board in 12 starts, many of which were allowance races and attempts to break his maiden. He was glossed over in 2024 Preakness odds, not being offered individually in the last futures pool. Does that set up Mugatu for a true underdog story? Perhaps, but he finished just fifth in his only graded stakes start, the Blue Grass last month.

The Word On Mugatu
Apr. 6: Finished fifth in the Blue Grass Stakes (G1), the first graded race Mugatu’s ran in.
Apr. 25: Was not included in the Preakness Futures Pool No. 2.
May 10: Christopher Britton bought Mugatu for only $14,000 and named him after Will Ferrell’s character in Zoolander. He is longtime friends with Mugatu’s trainer Jeff Engler. Both are from Ohio.
“I sort of got him into the racing game about four years ago. There were a few horses we did together, but he’s on a different playing field than we are, so he’s sort of done his own thing and has had pretty good success,” Britton said. “He had one in the Oaks, and if we could have drawn into the Derby, that would have been real neat.”
May 13: Opened a 20-1 longshot on the morning line, running out of Post 1.
