Tournament Notes
Per the odds table, the best price in the market on San Diego State is . The Aztecs last won the league tournament in 2021. It came against Utah State, which ended a three-run run of these teams competing in the title game.
Brian Dutcher’s bunch owns the 11th-rated adjusted defensive efficiency (per KenPom). For any other program, that would be considered a success. However, the Aztecs finished with a the second-best ranking in that category last season. But they’ve still made strides in the last month, particularly with their ball-screen coverage.
Moreover, San Diego State showcases its most prolific offense since the 2019-20 campaign. That’s a product of its two-headed backcourt, as Matt Bradley and Seattle transfer Darrion Trammel gifts Dutcher a pair of explosive scorers. With that in mind, there’s no value in the Aztecs’ price tag.
Utah State (), Boise State (), Nevada (), and San Jose State () round out of the rest of the market among the teams with first-round byes.
New Mexico A Dark Horse?
On Jan. 20, the Lobos boasted an 18-2 record and were considered a mid-major darling come mid-March. But after losing eight of their next 11 games, they’ll need to cash their Mountain West tournament odds in order to earn a bid.
Richard Pitino’s squad isn’t trustworthy defensively, touting the league’s fourth-worst AdjD in conference play. But its second-rated offense is what makes the Lobos an attractive longshot bet. Jamal Mashburn, Jr. and Jaelen House, New Mexico’s explosive guards, can certainly carry them to a tournament championship. They help produce a top-65 ShotQuality PPP ranking in transition.
On top of that, New Mexico possesses both experience and cohesion, which is normally vital for an underperforming team to exceed expectations on this stage. Similar to my West Virginia bet, it’ll require four wins over a four-day stretch.
