Spanish Grand Prix Odds & Prediction for 2026: Can Lando Norris Turn Pole Into a Win in Madrid?

Lando Norris entered the 2026 Formula 1 season as the defending world champion, but neither he nor McLaren has been able to replicate last year’s level of success.

Norris sits fourth in the driver standings with 171 points, 96 behind championship leader Kimi Antonelli, while McLaren is third in the constructors’ standings behind Mercedes and Ferrari. But after a difficult start to his title defense, Norris has started to find momentum, which has been a big storyline. He won in Hungary and the Netherlands before finishing fourth at Monza last week.

Now, he has another opportunity to make a statement.

Norris captured pole for Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix at the new Madring circuit, edging Antonelli by just 0.011 seconds with a 1:31.824 lap. Despite the difference in starting position, sportsbooks see almost nothing between the two entering race day. Norris and Antonelli are both +145 to win, making the front-row battle essentially a coin flip in the betting market.

Norris Has Track Position, Antonelli Has The Faster Car

Norris’ biggest advantage may simply be where he starts.

Madring is making its Formula 1 debut, so there’s no historical race data to lean on for bettors or oddsmakers, but drivers have repeatedly warned that passing could be difficult on the narrow, high-speed layout. That makes pole particularly valuable, especially considering how closely matched the leading cars have been throughout the weekend.

Norris also deserves credit for producing pole after McLaren didn’t appear to have the strongest car throughout the weekend. Antonelli led both FP2 and FP3, while Mercedes displayed the best long-run pace during Friday’s race simulations.

George Russell was the fastest driver in adjusted long-run data, with Max Verstappen approximately 0.13 seconds per lap behind him. Antonelli ranked third, roughly 0.55 seconds per lap behind Russell. McLaren’s race simulations were less encouraging, and Norris lost valuable running Friday because of a gearbox issue.

Still, Norris has the advantage that matters most entering Sunday: clean air and the first starting position.

At +145 on most sports betting apps, his implied probability to win is roughly 40.8%. Antonelli carries exactly the same price, and there’s a legitimate case for either. Antonelli has produced the better results across the entire 2026 season, leads the championship by 66 points over Russell and is coming off a victory at Monza. Norris, however, has the best possible starting spot at a circuit where passing could prove challenging.

Verstappen Offers The Best Value Behind The Favorites

If bettors don’t want to choose between the two +145 favorites, Max Verstappen at +700 is the most intriguing alternative, especially if you leverage a sportsbook promo.

Verstappen will start third, directly behind Norris and Antonelli, and Red Bull showed legitimate race pace Friday. His adjusted long-run pace was second-best in the field and only 0.13 seconds per lap behind Russell’s benchmark. He also topped Q2 before ultimately qualifying third.

At +700, Verstappen carries an implied win probability of 12.5%. That’s a sizable gap from the two favorites considering he starts directly behind them and appears to have enough race pace to stay involved.

George Russell at +1500 is another longshot worth monitoring. He starts sixth, which makes his path significantly more difficult, but his Friday long-run pace was the best of anyone. If tire degradation creates a multi-stop race or a Safety Car changes the strategy, Russell could quickly become a factor.

Pirelli selected the C2, C3 and C4 compounds for Madrid with the expectation that tire loads could be significant enough to encourage a two-stop strategy. Warm conditions should add another challenge, with Sunday temperatures expected to reach roughly 32 degrees Celsius.

Norris hasn’t had the championship defense he envisioned, and McLaren hasn’t been the dominant force it was a year ago. But with pole position and recent victories proving the reigning champion can still capitalize when given the opportunity, Sunday offers a chance to change the tone of his season.

The market sees Norris and Antonelli as equals. Starting position gives Norris the slight edge.
