Formula 1 heads to the streets of Baku this weekend for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, one of the most unpredictable races on the calendar. Between the narrow walls, enormous main straight and frequent Safety Car opportunities, the fastest car rarely has a straightforward path to victory.

This weekend, however, George Russell has separated himself from the field. The Mercedes driver was among the fastest throughout practice before delivering a dominant qualifying performance to secure pole. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli made a rare mistake, which has made headlines, crashing in qualifying and leaving himself 16th on the starting grid.

That combination has made Russell a heavy -250 favorite at DraftKings, while Antonelli remains the second choice at +500. Charles Leclerc follows at +1200, Oscar Piastri is +1500 and Max Verstappen sits at +1700. With Russell starting at the front and his biggest championship rival buried in the field, Saturday presents a massive opportunity for the title race to tighten.

Russell Has Dominated The Weekend

Russell’s pole position wasn’t an isolated fast lap. He has been the class of the field for most of the weekend. The Mercedes driver topped both FP1 and FP2 before finishing just 0.099 seconds behind Verstappen in FP3. Russell then delivered when it mattered most in qualifying, beating Leclerc by more than eight-tenths of a second for pole.

The race simulations also support Russell’s status as the favorite. His six-lap medium-tire run during FP2 produced the fastest representative long-run average of the session. Verstappen was the closest of the primary contenders, with Piastri and Leclerc also trailing Russell.

Practice data comes with caveats because fuel loads, engine settings and tire compounds vary, but the larger picture has been consistent: Mercedes has looked exceptionally strong in Baku. At -250, Russell carries an implied win probability of roughly 71%. That is an expensive price, particularly at a track where Safety Cars, strategy swings and contact with the walls can change a race instantly.

Baku also gives drivers behind him opportunities to attack. The long main straight and heavy braking zones make overtaking more realistic here than at many street circuits. Still, Russell has the strongest combination of outright pace, race pace and track position. If he avoids trouble, he is the driver everyone else needs to beat.

Best Bet: George Russell -250

Leclerc And Piastri Offer Value From The Front

The more interesting betting question is whether anyone behind Russell offers enough value to take a shot against the favorite. Charles Leclerc at +1200 at DraftKings immediately stands out because he starts alongside Russell on the front row. The Ferrari driver has consistently qualified well in Baku throughout his career, and starting second gives him a chance to pressure Russell immediately.

The concern is simple: Russell has been faster. Leclerc was well behind him in FP2 and again gave up more than eight-tenths in qualifying. For Leclerc to win, he may need to beat Russell off the line, gain an edge on strategy or benefit from the type of Safety Car chaos Baku has produced before.

Oscar Piastri at +1500 may be the more appealing value option. He starts third, only narrowly behind Leclerc in qualifying, and his long-run pace was competitive. Piastri has already shown he can win around this circuit, taking the 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix after a memorable battle with Leclerc.

That starting position and price make +1500 intriguing for bettors looking to avoid the favorite.

Max Verstappen at +1700 is the best deeper longshot. He starts eighth, which creates considerably more work, but Red Bull’s underlying pace has been stronger than that grid position suggests. Verstappen was near the front throughout practice, topped FP3 and produced one of the better long-run averages of the weekend.

Baku is also favorable for a recovery drive because passing is possible. If Verstappen clears traffic quickly and catches the right Safety Car or strategy sequence, +1700 gives bettors enough upside to take a small chance. Kimi Antonelli at +500 is tougher to back from 16th. Mercedes clearly has the speed for him to move forward, but it's a short price for a driver who needs to pass 15 cars. The price is steep, but his advantage has been clear all weekend.

Best Bet: George Russell -250

Value Bet: Oscar Piastri +1500

Longshot: Max Verstappen +1700
