The most anticipated game of the 2021 NFL regular season drew the amount of action that you’d expect, and that ended up being a great result for legal sportsbooks. Among all 2021 football games, the return of Tom Brady to New England was the most bet NFL game at BetMGM.

How did bettors do in Week 4? Not great. To pull even on the season, bettors will need to avoid more weeks like this past one. It wasn’t all bad news for bettors, though. There were some rays of light peeking through the canopy.

Most Bet NFL Game: Tom Brady Beats New England But Doesn’t Cover

According to BetMGM Sportsbook trader Christian Cipollini, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at New England Patriots game on Sunday night was the most-bet game of the 2021 NFL season so far.

Cipollini said that 2/3 of tickets on the spread took Tom Brady and Tampa Bay -7.5, so that was a win for the book. However, bettors narrowly escaped a bigger loss. Cipollini also said that 91% of bettors on the moneyline backed the Bucs there as well.

The Patriots had a chance to take a 20-17 lead with under a minute left in the game, but a 56-yard field goal attempt hit the left upright. Had that field goal attempt been good and the Pats been able to hold on over the final minute, it could have been the biggest win of the year for books.

Other games went sportsbooks’ way, too.

On the college level, the biggest win of the week for sportsbooks was bettors who backed Arkansas +16.5 against Georgia. BetMGM says that was the most-bet college game of the week.

62% of tickets and 65% of handle before kickoff had the Razorbacks falling within that margin. On the moneyline, 67% of bets and 54% of the money took Arkansas straight up. The Bulldogs then delivered for books in impressive fashion, slaughtering the hogs 37-0.

Two other top-five college teams and a couple of NFL teams softened the blow of this past week for bettors, though. A couple of bettors actually hit it big on college action.

Big wagers pay off for college bettors

Before Friday night, a bettor put down $110,000 on the Iowa -3 at Maryland. A few hours later, BetMGM took an $80,000 wager on Alabama -15. The Crimson Tide and Hawkeyes both cooperated, netting the Iowa bettor $100,000 and the Bama bettor $66,667.

Big results in the NFL for the public included the Kansas City Chiefs’ 42-30 win over the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys’ 36-28 victory over the Carolina Panthers.

Cipollini said that 97% of the bets on the moneyline and spread backed Kansas City -7. Over 60% of tickets took Dallas -4 in the same way. According to Cipollini, those were the biggest wins for the public this week.

Cipollini also says that the result of the Monday night Las Vegas Raiders at Los Angeles Chargers won’t be able to swing things back in bettors’ favor. So this week was a win for the books. If not for a wide-left field goal try, it might have been one for the record books.
