Roman Anthony Injury: Red Sox Star’s Game 2 Status In Doubt

The Boston Red Sox may be facing elimination without one of their best young hitters. Roman Anthony exited Tuesday’s Wild Card Series opener against the Yankees after discomfort flared in his right hand, leaving his status for Game 2 uncertain.

Red Sox manager Chad Tracy said Anthony experienced pain after a check swing against Yankees starter Cam Schlittler. Anthony was removed in the sixth inning of Boston’s 9-0 loss and replaced by reserve infielder Andruw Monasterio.

“He took a check swing and then another swing, and his hand flared on him, and it got uncomfortable, so we had to make a move,” Tracy said after the game.

The issue was not entirely new. According to Boston Globe reporter Alex Speier, Monasterio was notified before the game that he could be needed because Anthony was already dealing with discomfort in the hand.

Brutal Timing For Boston

Anthony’s exit came in a game Boston was still trying to keep within reach. The Yankees carried a short lead before Ben Rice blew the game open with a late grand slam.

Schlittler set the tone for New York, tossing 6 1/3 scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts. The Yankees now hold a 1-0 series lead in the best-of-three matchup, putting Boston in a win-or-go-home situation Wednesday night. Boston has not yet announced whether he will be available for Game 2.

The Red Sox are scheduled to start Sonny Gray in Game 2, while Max Fried takes the mound for New York. If Anthony can't go, Boston’s lineup loses another important source of length and upside in an already difficult matchup.
