MLB Pitcher Props for Sep. 4: Pirates' Jones Racks Up K's vs. Angels

We’ve got about three and a half weeks left in the regular season with teams still jostling for playoff position. All 30 teams are in action on Friday though there are 16 games on schedule with a pair of AL Central squads playing a doubleheader on the shores of Lake Erie. The slate kicks off with a 2:10 pm ET start when the Tigers open a series and a day-night doubleheader with the Guardians at Progressive Field.

We’ve taken a look at the matchups on the docket and found the best options are as far as betting on MLB pitcher props on the board. Read on to get our breakdown of the top plays for Friday, September 4 on the diamond as we try to put some cash in your pocket. All odds were current as of 1 am ET on September 4.

Best MLB Pitcher Strikeout Bets Today: Player Props for September 4

Chris Sale, Braves Over 6.5 Strikeouts (-139, DraftKings)

Sale may be 37 and not going as deep into games for the Braves as in the past but he still gets the job done. He owns a 13-9 record with a 2.06 ERA, a 1.00 WHIP and 177 punchouts over 144 innings of work on the year. Meanwhile, he comes in off a complete game shutout where he fanned 11 Dodgers in a 1-0 Braves win. He now gets a crack at a Phillies squad he pitches well against over the course of his career. Philadelphia is right in the middle of the league, ranking 15th in the majors with 8.29 strikeouts per contest. In his career, Sale has seen current Phillies hitters post a .214 mark against him in 131 at-bats. Meanwhile, he has a 32.8% whiff rate (43 Ks) in that sample size. Take the over here as a result.

Jared Jones, Pirates Over 5.5 Strikeouts (-118, Betr)

It’s been a tough season for Jones, who comes in 2-6 with a 4.83 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP over 72.2 innings in 16 starts on the year. However, he still records strikeouts at a solid rate, logging 83 punchouts on the season. In this contest, he gets to face an Angels squad that strikes out at the third-highest rate in the majors with 9.44 strikeouts per game. In addition, that number climbs up to 9.53 strikeouts on the road. The Angels don’t have much familiarity with Jones. Only three hitters have ever faced him for a total of six at-bats. Two of those ended in punchouts. With the Angels being prone to striking out, look for Jones to pick up some whiffs and go over the prop.

Best MLB Pitcher Prop Picks Today (09/04):

Nick Martinez, Rays Over 17.5 Outs Recorded (-115, FanDuel)

Martinez put together a terrific season while flying under the radar for the Rays this season. He is 13-4 with a 2.99 ERA, a 1.10 WHIP, 22 walks and 91 strikeouts over 153.2 innings in 26 starts this season. Martinez gets to pitch here at Globe Life Field, which trends toward being a pitcher friendly ballpark over the last several seasons. Facing the Rangers, who are 26th in the majors with 4.09 runs per game, works in his favor. In addition, Martinez tossed at least six innings in 15 of his starts this season. That includes five where he worked at least seven frames. Look for him to keep the Rangers in check in this contest.

Jackson Kent, Nationals Under 14.5 Outs Recorded (+120, Fanatics)

Kent was called up from the minors last month and logged four big league starts. It’s been a rough transition to the majors for him. He comes in 1-2 with a 5.59 ERA, a 1.71 WHIP, 15 walks and 17 strikeouts in those outings. In addition, he comes in off his first start where he went at least five innings. That was likely helped by the fact that it was his second straight outing against the Marlins, an offensively mediocre squad. We had him in this spot Wednesday against the Braves but that start was pushed back. He now faces a Dodgers squad that stands fourth in the majors with 4.92 runs per game. While Los Angeles scuffled lately at the dish, they can wait out Kent. They are third in the majors in walks per game and that makes a short stint for him.
