MLB Pitcher Props for Sep. 18: Nationals' Cavalli Shuffles Cards
There are less than 10 days left in the Major League Baseball regular season. Four teams, the Dodgers, Brewers, Rays and Yankees, clinched playoff spots entering Thursday. Eight others, the Giants, Rockies, Reds, Mets, Nationals, Angels, Royals and Athletics, are eliminated from contention.
There’s a full 15-game slate on the diamond, starting at 6:40 pm ET with a pair of games. The Chicago Cubs are on the road as they open a NL Central series with the Cincinnati Reds. Meanwhile, an interleague set between the Kansas City Royals and Pittsburgh Pirates starts at the same time at PNC Park.
In the American League, three teams are within three games of the final wild card spot. Meanwhile, in the National League, the Padres’ recent surge gave them a four-game lead over Arizona for the final wild card spot with nine games to play.

Cease is in the thick of the AL Cy Young chase as well thanks to his big strikeout numbers. He is 11-5 with a 2.38 ERA, a 1.064 WHIP, 72 walks and 236 strikeouts over 166.1 innings of work. In addition, he is second in the majors in whiffs and leads the American League.
Cease pitches decently against current Texas hitters. The Rangers are a collective 22-for-84 (.262) against Cease, though he has 31 strikeouts. Meanwhile, Texas has the sixth-worst offense in the majors with 4.18 runs per game. Cease keeps the Rangers in check while piling up the whiffs.
Bryan Woo, Mariners Over 4.5 Strikeouts (-135, Fanatics)
Woo, like the Mariners as a whole, has been streaky this season. He is 12-9 with a 3.88 ERA, a 1.047 WHIP, 35 walks and 163 strikeouts over 162.1 innings of work on the year. Woo has the advantage of most of the Rockies’ hitters being unfamiliar with him. Only two Colorado hitters have ever faced him.
Jake McCarthy is zero-for-two while Mickey Moniak is four-of-12 with two doubles and a homer. In addition, he’s whiffed three times. Colorado strikes out at the seventh-highest rate in the majors this season (8.69 strikeouts per game) entering Thursday. Woo should surpass his number in this contest.

Cade Cavalli Over 17.5 Outs Recorded (-120, Hard Rock)
Cavalli has flown under the radar for the Nationals this season. He quietly is 12-5 with a 3.12 ERA, a 1.166 WHIP, 48 walks and 194 strikeouts over 166.1 innings in 31 starts. Now, Cavalli plunked a league-leading 16 hitters but you can’t hold that against him.
In his last 12 starts, Cavalli has allowed more than two earned runs just once. Meanwhile, he’s tossed at least six innings 11 times in that span. That includes four scoreless outings. Current Cardinals hitters are four-of-16 against him in his career.
Cavalli faces a St. Louis squad that averages just 3.83 runs per game at home this season. That number is 28th in the majors. It works in his favor as he shuts down the Redbirds.
Tyler Mahle, Braves Over 17.5 Outs Recorded (-110, Hard Rock)
It’s been a rough year for Mahle, who started the season with the Giants before being dealt to Atlanta at the trade deadline. He is 6-10 with a 3.91 ERA, a 1.246 WHIP and 127 strikeouts over 138 innings of work on the year. However, since coming to Atlanta, he is 3-1 with a 1.25 ERA, six walks and 38 strikeouts over 43.1 innings of work in seven starts.
Mahle went at least six innings in eight of his last 10 starts entering this contest. Meanwhile, one of the other two starts saw him go 5.2 frames. That includes a seven-inning stint against the Phillies in his previous start.
Meanwhile, current Houston hitters are a combined 10-for-57 (.175) against him. Mahle held Jose Altuve (two-for-eight), Yordan Alvarez (one-for-six) and Christian Walker (one-for-10) in check in his career. He continues his late-season turnaround with another solid outing.
