MLB Home Run Props and Predictions Today: Top Player Props for Sept. 9

Football is kicking off, but there is still plenty of MLB baseball to attack. Wednesday’s MLB home run props feature two powerful left-handed bats in favorable matchups against struggling right-handed pitchers, and I’m also looking at a plus-money strikeout prop in Minnesota.

Let’s get into my best MLB home run props and player props for Wednesday, Sept. 9!

MLB Home Run Props Today for Sept. 9

We’ll start in the Bronx, where the New York Yankees host the Colorado Rockies at 7:05 p.m. ET. Ben Rice to hit a home run on DraftKings Sportsbook is my favorite MLB home run pick today.

The Yankees were winners Tuesday despite a late Hunter Goodman home run for Colorado, but I’m targeting Rockies starter Tomoyuki Sugano on Wednesday. Sugano enters with an ERA north of 5.00, and I have been attacking him almost every time he takes the mound.

The underlying numbers are ugly. According to Baseball Savant, Sugano ranks in the second percentile in barrel rate allowed, the first percentile in expected ERA, and the second percentile in average exit velocity allowed. He also no longer keeps the ball on the ground at the rate many expected when he initially came to MLB.

Sugano has allowed 27 home runs this season, and 20 of them have come against left-handed hitters. Lefties are slugging .572 against him. That is a brutal profile to bring into Yankee Stadium, particularly when facing a power hitter like Rice.

Rice is enjoying a true breakout campaign for the Yankees. The left-handed slugger has consistently hit the ball extremely hard and has a profile loaded with encouraging advanced indicators. His ability to elevate the baseball should play perfectly against a right-hander who has been crushed by left-handed power.

MLB Home Run Predictions: Adley Rutschman

Next, we’ll head to Fenway Park, where the Boston Red Sox host the Los Angeles Angels at 6:45 p.m. ET. Adley Rutschman to hit a home run is another MLB home run prop I’m backing Wednesday.

Rutschman has started to find his footing since joining Boston. The switch-hitting catcher has three home runs since Sept. 3 and comes into Wednesday’s matchup with some legitimate momentum. He had Tuesday off, so he should be fresh for a favorable spot against Angels right-hander Ryan Johnson.

Johnson has been underwhelming over 78-plus innings this season. He owns an ERA north of 5.00, and his expected ERA is nearly identical to his actual ERA. In other words, the results are not merely a product of bad luck. He has pitched like a below-average starter.

Johnson ranks in the 11th percentile in barrel rate allowed and the 17th percentile in ground-ball rate, according to Baseball Savant. He is not the worst pitcher in baseball, but he has been nowhere close to league average, and he has had problems with both left- and right-handed hitters.

Rutschman has always possessed a sweet swing and was known more as a line-drive, gap-to-gap hitter early in his career. But he is beginning to show more power in a Red Sox uniform.

I like targeting hitters in form, especially when they are facing pitchers who struggle to keep the ball on the ground. Rutschman checks both boxes Wednesday, and this is a nice place to buy into the recent surge.

MLB Strikeout Props Today: Zebby Matthews

For my MLB strikeout prop today, I’m taking Zebby Matthews over 4.5 strikeouts at +124 on DraftKings as the Detroit Tigers host the Minnesota Twins.

I have been out on Matthews for much of the season, and I have frequently targeted power against him. But I’m willing to change course in this spot, especially with the number and price available.

Matthews has enough leash to get there. When he is throwing well, the Twins have allowed him to work past 100 pitches. He also showed plenty of strikeout upside in the minors, even if that skill has not consistently translated at the major-league level.

The Tigers have been a favorable matchup for opposing strikeout props recently. Since Aug. 1, Detroit owns the 10th-highest strikeout rate against right-handed pitching in baseball. That is not an automatic green light, but it gives Matthews a reasonable path to five strikeouts.

This is more of an odds play than a full endorsement of Matthews. The right-hander has strikeout upside, even if it does not always show up consistently. At +124, the market is giving us a good number on a modest 4.5 line.
