MLB Best Bets Today: Top Pitcher Props for Sept. 29

It’s the opening day of the MLB postseason, and that brings us to our best MLB bets today. I'll share my favorite pitcher props for the slate of games on Tuesday, Sept. 29. It’s Game 1 for each of four best-of-three wild card series.

Baseball starts at 2 p.m. ET, when the Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves lock up in Atlanta. The Chicago White Sox take on the Houston Astros at 5 p.m. ET. Meanwhile, the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees renew their rivalry at 8 p.m. ET. Finally, the Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres meet for the second straight season in the playoffs, with Game 1 starting at 10 p.m. ET.

We’ll start the column off with our top pitching props by looking at a pair of NL East rivals opening the postseason in Atlanta.

Pitching Prop #1: Chris Sale, Braves

Chris Sale finished the regular season 14-9 with a 2.16 ERA, a 0.984 WHIP, 31 walks and 200 strikeouts over 162.2 innings of work. He faced the Phillies four times in the regular season. Sale posted a 3-0 mark with a 2.08 ERA, six walks, and 29 strikeouts over 26 innings of work against them.

In addition, Sale is in the 96th percentile in chase rate (36.5%), 85th percentile in whiff rate (30.4%), and the 94th percentile in strikeout rate (30.9%) this season.

Current Phillies hitters own a miserable .209 average (37-for-177) against Sale in his career. Meanwhile, he recorded 56 strikeouts (31.6% strikeout rate) in those at-bats. Throw in 47 strikeouts over 34 innings in his postseason career, and he cashes this prop.

Pitching Prop #2: Cam Schlittler, Yankees

Next, we take a look at a battle of AL East rivals.

Schlittler is the ace for the Yankees this season, not to mention a Cy Young candidate. He is 14-6 with a 1.95 ERA, a 0.919 WHIP, 49 walks and 239 strikeouts over 193.2 innings of work on the year.

Schlittler finished tied for third in the majors in strikeouts on the year and fourth in WHIP. In addition, Schlittler recorded seven-plus strikeouts in 20 starts this season, with six additional starts with six whiffs. He made four starts against the Red Sox in the regular season.

Schlittler was 2-1 with a 0.74 ERA, nine walks and 27 strikeouts over 24.1 innings of work. Meanwhile, he threw eight scoreless innings in the playoffs against Boston last year, striking out 12. He finished in the 86th percentile in chase rate (34.4%), the 79th percentile in whiff rate (29.4%), and the 95th percentile in strikeout rate (31.4%) in the regular season.

Current Red Sox hitters own a paltry .167 average against Schlitter (13-for-78) in his career. Meanwhile, he has 25 strikeouts in that stretch. Schlittler records his punchouts here.

Pitching Prop #3: Michael King, Padres

We go to the West for a National League wild card matchup between the Chicago Cubs and the San Diego Padres.

Michael King had the misfortune of the Padres’ offense misfiring for much of the first half of the season. As a result, his numbers were impacted. He finished the regular season 12-10 despite a 3.21 ERA, a 1.178 WHIP, and 159 strikeouts over 185 innings of work. King tossed at least six innings in 22 of his 32 starts this year. Two other starts saw him work 5.2 innings.

Petco Park has favored pitchers heavily this season. King finished the regular season in the 86th percentile in average exit velocity (87 mph) allowed. In addition, he was in the 89th percentile in hard-hit rate allowed (32.7%) and 66th in ground ball percentage (45.1%) this year. He likely turns in another solid outing and tries to set up the Padres’ bullpen for success.
