Game 1 Recap
In the opener, Tampa Bay beat New York 1-0, with Rays’ starter Drew Rasmussen flirting with a no-hitter, not giving up a hit until two outs into the eighth inning. Austin Wells broke up the no-no but was thrown out trying to get a triple, and Jonathan Aranda provided the only run with a solo home run.

Starting Pitching Matchup
Yankees
Tonight’s New York starter, Cam Schlittler (14-9, 1.95 ERA, 0.92 WHIP), is the massive favorite to win the Cy Young Award and ranks second in ERA and tied for third in strikeouts this season. He started Game 1 of the AL Wild Card and tossed 6 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing only two hits in the 9-0 win over the Red Sox. After losing his first start against Tampa Bay this season, he won the next two, totaling 11 innings and allowing just one run. This season Schlittler worked 193 2/3 innings with 239 strikeouts and 49 walks.
Rays
Freddy Peralta (10-11, 4.42 ERA, 1.33 WHIP) takes the hill in Game 2, and the Rays have won his last six starts, in which he did not give up more than one run in any of them. This is his first start in October, and in five starts in September he was lights out with a 0.96 ERA. He came to the Yankees in late August in a trade with the New York Mets. While with the Mets, Peralta started one game against the Yankees, giving up three runs in five innings in a loss. This season he has logged 169 innings with 156 strikeouts and 63 walks.
Yankees vs. Rays Prediction: Yankees ML -131
Man, what a pitching matchup, as you have the likely Cy Young winner, Schlittler, facing off against Peralta, who has pitched great for the Yankees lately and had an ERA south of 1.00 in September. While this is a great starting-pitching matchup, and even with these teams combining for one run in Game 1, I am staying away from the Under, which is posted low at 6.5 runs.
I think Schlittler will have the better outing as he blanked the Red Sox in his lone post-season start so far. Peralta will pitch well as well, but Schlittler will outduel him. The New York lineup will get some runs, but not many, and they will not need many, as they will get the win with their ace on the hill taming the Tampa lineup.
The popular sportsbooks in the US all have many betting markets for this game and all the other MLB ones.
More Yankees vs. Rays Picks, Props and Best Bets
- Cam Schlittler to record 8+ strikeouts: (+130, BetMGM) - Schlittler ranks tied for third in the Majors in strikeouts and struck out 10 in his last start. In his last start of the season, he faced the Rays and had only five Ks, but he pitched just three innings. He will get 8+ strikeouts in this game, and for a safer bet, take him for 7+ strikeouts at -142.
- Freddy Peralta to record Over 14.5 outs: (+103, DraftKings) - Peralta has recorded over 14.5 outs in each of his last seven starts.
- First inning hits 0-1: (-135, FanDuel) – I look for a pitcher’s duel between the starters, and in Game 2, they will each get off to solid starts in the first inning.
