Starting Pitching Matchup
Rays
Nick Martinez (15-6, 3.10 ERA, 1.09 WHIP) goes for Tampa Bay and they have lost three of his last four starts, including the last two where he gave up six runs in 8 2/3 innings. The Rays won his first two starts against the Yankees this season, where he gave up one run in each and lost the last one where he gave up two runs. This season, Martinez worked 180 innings with 109 strikeouts and 26 walks.
Yankees
Max Fried (5-5, 2.80 ERA, 0.99 WHIP) takes the hill for New York, and his last start was in the AL Wild Card, where he gave up one run in six innings in a 9-2 win over the Red Sox. While the Yankees have won three of his last four starts, they lost the one against the Rays, where he was not sharp, giving up four runs in 6 2/3 innings. New York also lost his other start this season facing Tampa, where he went eight innings and gave up three runs. Fried missed more than two months in the middle of the season and has logged 112 2/3 innings, striking out 104 and walking 33.

Rays vs. Yankees Prediction: Yankees ML -176
The Yankees’ bats have gone silent in this series with only two runs in two games. Tampa Bay has not been lighting up the scoreboard, but they have gotten solid pitching. However, they are on the road in this game, and in the second-to-last series of the regular season they lost three of four games to the Yankees in the Bronx.
Martinez was an All-Star this season and pitched well against the Yankees. Fried has had an injury-marred season but pitched well, even though he did not do so in his two starts against the Rays. Still, the Yankees will not go down quietly, and I expect their bats to wake up tonight.
Martinez will struggle again, as he has given up six runs over his last two starts, where he lasted only 8 2/3 innings. New York will wake up at the dish, and that is why I am taking them to win Game 3 and avoid the series sweep in their house.
Rays vs. Yankees Picks, Props and Best Bets
- Max Fried 5+ strikeouts: (+100, BetMGM) – Fried has struck out over five batters in three of his last four starts and did so in one of the two starts facing Tampa Bay this season.
- Nick Martinez to give up over 1.5 runs: (-172, DraftKings) – Martinez has given up at least two runs in each of his last three starts and gave up four in the last one.
- Ben Rice to hit a home run: (+342, DraftKings) – Why not? Rice hit two home runs in the Game 2 loss, led the Yankees this season with 41 home runs, and Martinez has given up three long balls over his last two starts.
- Yankees to have the lead after the fifth inning with moneyline -0.5: (-125, FanDuel) – Pretty good odds for the Yankees to have at least a one-run lead after five innings against Martinez, who has given up six runs over his last two starts.
