Dodgers vs. Rockies Prediction, Odds and Props for Aug. 17: L.A. Takes Opener

In the opener of an NL West series in Mile High City, the Colorado Rockies play host to the Los Angeles Dodgers. This Dodgers vs. Rockies prediction will give you key info on the game, the pitching matchup, and some value player prop bets.
After winning three in a row, the Dodgers have lost three of their last four games, including their last two. The club is still atop the NL West seven games clear of the second-place San Diego Padres.
The Rockies have won four of their last five games but are still in the basement of the NL West and have the fewest wins in the National League.
The top US sportsbooks have the Dodgers as the major favorites in the series opener at -271 with the Rockies at +217 and a total of 11 runs.
Dodgers’ Skipper Calls Out Club
The Dodgers are 5-11 in their last 16 games, and manager Dave Roberts recently called them out, saying, "I say this because it's just been four or five, six weeks of below-average production in our offense. It's just the truth, and I think we just haven't played clean baseball for quite some time, and that speaks to the defense."
L.A. is coming off a series in which it lost three of four games to the Milwaukee Brewers and now trails them by three games for the most wins in the NL. In the series, they only totaled eight runs, with four coming in the opener.
On the season, L.A. ranks fourth in the Majors in runs scored and sixth in team ERA.
This season, the Dodgers have won seven of 10 games against the Rockies.
L.A. Starter for Series Opener
Blake Snell (0-1, 5.00 ERA, 1.33 WHIP) takes the hill for the Dodgers, and his last start was his second of the season after missing over three months with an elbow injury. His last start was a good one, giving up one run in six innings and striking out 10 in a 5-4 extra-inning win over the Kansas City Royals. Last season in Snell’s lone start against the Rockies, he tossed six scoreless innings in a Dodgers’ win.
Rockies’ Lineup Blows Up
In their last game, the Rockies blew up at the dish in a 13-7 win over the San Francisco Giants. Brett Sullivan and Adael Amador each had three-run home runs, and Mickey Moniak had three RBIs.
Hunter Goodman (.251, 34 home runs, 69 RBIs) ranks fourth in the Majors in home runs and has missed the last three games with a shoulder injury and is listed as day-to-day.
Jake McCarthy (.291, 13 home runs, 67 RBIs) ranks second on the club in RBIs and has cooled off after a torrid start to the month and has no RBIs in the last seven games.
With the Rockies well out of the playoff picture, they are playing many young players called up from the minors.
It’s the same old song and dance for Colorado, as they have a good offense, ranking eighth in runs scored, but pitching is the issue, ranking dead last in team ERA.
Colorado starter for Series Opener
Tomoyuki Sugano (12-5, 4.43 ERA, 1.25 WHIP) gets the nod for the Rockies, and they have won five of his last six starts. While he has not given more than three runs in his last five starts, the Rockies have lost both of his starts against the Dodgers, where he gave up eight runs in 8 2/3 innings. On the season, Sugano has logged 113 2/3 innings, striking out 66 and walking 26.
Dodgers vs. Rockies Prediction – Dodgers run line -1.5 runs -168
Dodgers run line -1.5 runs DraftKings, -168
Snell was electric in his first start after missing three months with an injury. He struck out 10 and only gave up one run and will have another good outing in this series opener. Sugano has been one of the few bright spots for the Rockies, and while pitching pretty well as of late, he has given up eight runs in only 8 2/3 innings in two losses to the Dodgers.
Snell and the L.A. lineup will get it done in this game, and they will win and also win by at least two runs, so take the run line to get better odds.
