That said, this remains a dangerous roster. Crow-Armstrong developed into one of the game's premier all-around players and made headlines all year, and Chicago has enough offensive depth to challenge any pitching staff when its lineup is clicking.

My favorite Cubs vs. Padres prediction is the Padres moneyline at -125 on most sports betting sites.

Chicago deserves credit for winning the regular-season series, but I think this matchup is more about where each team is entering the postseason than what happened over six games earlier this year.

The Cubs looked like legitimate World Series contenders during the first half of the season, but I wasn't nearly as convinced late in the year. They finished the season by dropping four of their final five games and simply didn't look like the same club that surged through the middle of the schedule.

Meanwhile, San Diego continued to play quality baseball and earned home-field advantage with a 91-71 record. Petco Park has been one of the tougher places to play all season, and I trust the Padres' combination of pitching, experience and star power to take advantage of that edge.

I expect a competitive game, but I think San Diego finds a way to win behind a complete performance. Home-field advantage truly means a lot at this stage of the postseason.
