MLB's AL West Division Race is Wide Open

As is the case in many MLB seasons, the American League West race is shaping up to be one of the most wide-open divisions in baseball. And this season, it really does feel fully up for grabs.

No team has been convincing enough to separate itself as the clear top team in the division. Nobody has looked dominant like AL West contenders have in years past, which has left the door open for nearly every team to remain in the mix.

This is still a division with proven teams. The Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers and Houston Astros have all made the playoffs and had real success in recent seasons. But this year, none of those clubs has taken control. Seattle is sitting at the top of the division, Texas is right there behind, and Houston remains within striking distance despite an uneven start.

Even the Athletics have been solid in the right moments and are very much part of the race. The Los Angeles Angels are more of a long shot, but even they’re only nine games back at this point in the season.

Again, none of these contenders have looked like true division favorites. Most of the AL West is hovering around .500 or just below it, which creates a real opportunity for one team to go on a multi-series run over the course of a few weeks and suddenly seize control of the division.

That kind of parity should make the AL West fascinating throughout the summer. These teams all have enough talent to get hot, but they’ve also all shown enough inconsistency to keep the race tight.

Ultimately, this is shaping up to be a division race that could come down to the wire late in the season. And that’s what makes divisional battles and playoff races so exciting.
