Dodgers Trade for Tarik Skubal

The MLB trade deadline is less than 30 hours away as the proverbial clock strikes midnight at 6 pm ET Monday. We’ve already seen major fireworks as arguably the top trade chip on the market was dealt late Saturday night.

There should be more deals being made but did Saturday night’s blockbuster merely drive home the fact that a salary cap is necessary for the good of the sport? Let’s take a look at what shook out and what may be next.

The Blockbuster

To Los Angeles: SP Tarik Skubal

To Detroit: SP River Ryan, SP Brady Smith, OF Zyhir Hope

Skubal is a pending free agent at the end of the season but the hopes were high that the Tigers would fetch a king’s ransom in a trade. Instead, they ended up getting what looks like pennies on the dollar. While it’s obvious that Skubal’s value was capped to some extent due to the fact that he is a pending free agent, the return seems less than enthralling from a Tigers’ fan perspective.

Ryan made four starts for the Dodgers in 2024 before blowing out his elbow. That injury cost him all of last season and his return this year has been less than inspiring. Meanwhile, in 2026, he is 3-1 at Triple-A Oklahoma City with a 1.294 WHIP, eight walks and 43 strikeouts. The fact that he has thrown only 36.1 innings in those outings while posting a 4.46 ERA are cause for concern. Smith hasn’t made it past A ball yet and while he’s 21, there’s a long road to travel. He’s 0-10 with a 4.72 ERA in 31 minor league appearances, 30 starts, spanning 95.1 innings of work.

Hope is the best piece of the return for the Dodgers. He’s been good at Double-A Tulsa this season. Hope is hitting .293 with 17 doubles, a triple, 23 homers and 87 RBI over 94 games on the year. However, he’s not even the top outfield prospect for the Dodgers, who swung this deal without parting with Josue De Paula and Eduardo Quintero.

The Trade Deadline

This is where things get a bit more complicated. After seeing that deal go down, other franchises have to reevaluate their respective situations. Milwaukee and Atlanta were capable of swinging a deal for Skubal with their farm systems only to end up on the outside looking in. Will either side make a move to try and make themselves better for the stretch run? Conversely, will we see a lot of teams playing their cards closer to the vest instead?

As for the rest of the trade deadline, one has to pause for a moment. If you’re a team that is contending for a postseason spot, do you still try to go all out and deal away prospects in an effort to bolster your squad? Furthermore, are you willing to make major deals given that the Dodgers, who were a super team before, merely got better? Is it safer waiting to see how the labor situation plays out while building for 2027 and beyond?

What Does It Mean for the Sport?

For starters, the odds shifted for the Dodgers in pursuit of the World Series crown. They currently stand at +145 odds to win their third straight World Series crown. Should they accomplish the feat, they would be the first National League squad to win three straight World Series titles. With the way the Dodgers’ payroll continues to climb, there has to be concern.

All that this deal does is stoke the flames when it comes to a salary cap. We already know that is a bone of contention and could be the impetus for a labor situation in 2027. The fact remains that the Dodgers are simply playing chess while everyone else is playing checkers when it comes to contracts. They have over $1 billion in deferred money owed to more than 10 players, including Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, Blake Snell, Kyle Tucker and Freddie Freeman. Is this a loophole that needs addressing in the next set of labor talks as well?

What’s clear is the rich continue to get richer while the rest of the league tries to catch up at this stage. Whether that happens this fall or sometime down the line remains to be seen.
