Chicago White Sox Select Roch Cholowsky No. 1 Overall in 2026 MLB Draft
The 2026 MLB Draft officially kicked off Sunday night, and it didn’t take long for the first big storyline to emerge.
With the No. 1 overall pick, the Chicago White Sox selected UCLA shortstop Roch Cholowsky, officially putting him on the map as a potential cornerstone for a franchise that’s quickly rebuilding itself into a competitive team.
And for Chicago, this is about much more than just adding another prospect.
Again, this is a full organizational reset for the White Sox. This season has gone better than many expected, and now the organization needs young pieces to continue sustaining success into the future and eventually reach the upper echelon of the league.
That’s where Cholowsky comes in.
He entered the draft as one of the most complete players available, with a strong all-around offensive game and the defensive ability to remain at shortstop long term. That’s why he climbed to the top of draft boards and ultimately became the first player selected.
Now, he’ll become one of the most closely watched prospects in all of baseball as he begins his professional career. The White Sox are betting that he can become a foundational piece of the franchise for years to come, and if he develops the way many evaluators expect, he’ll have every opportunity to do just that.
The MLB Draft doesn’t generate the same attention as the NBA or NFL Draft, but every franchise player has to start somewhere. For Roch Cholowsky, that journey officially begins in Chicago, where the White Sox are hoping they’ve found the next face of their franchise.
Outside of him, many other prospects were chosen by teams around the league as more potential future stars have found new homes.
