Bryce Harper Cycle, Kyle Schwarber Homers Power Historic Phillies Win

The Philadelphia Phillies put together one of the wildest offensive games of the MLB season on Saturday night.

In the same game, two historic baseball feats were accomplished by two different Phillies stars. These are milestones that most MLB players never achieve even once in their entire careers.

The first was Kyle Schwarber hitting two home runs in the same inning. Schwarber blasted two homers in Philadelphia’s massive third inning against the Mets, with the two shots totaling more than 900 feet of distance. He later added a third home run, giving him one of the most ridiculous power-hitting nights of the season.

Then there was Bryce Harper.

Harper hit for the first cycle of his MLB career, recording a single, double, triple and home run in the same game. That’s hard enough to do over nine innings. Harper did it by the fifth inning, which made the performance even more remarkable.

Obviously, when two players are making history like that, the Phillies were dominant. Philadelphia beat New York 15-3, and when Harper came to the plate in the fifth inning needing the hit that would complete the cycle, the Phillies were already in complete control.

That’s the bigger takeaway here.

This was a great game for the Phillies, but it also made them look increasingly dangerous despite recently losing Adolis García to a season-ending injury. Philadelphia is still dealing with real injury issues, but when Harper and Schwarber are producing like this, the ceiling of this team remains extremely high.

The Phillies improved to 41-35 with the win. They’re still chasing the Braves in the NL East, but they’re firmly above .500 and continue to look like the type of team no one will want to see in October.

Whether Philadelphia gets there as a division winner or a wild-card team, Saturday night was a reminder of how dangerous this lineup can be.

Harper made history. Schwarber made history. And the Phillies made a statement.
