The 2026 MLB All-Star Game wasn’t the highest-scoring, offense-slanted contest, but it did show just how quickly a baseball game can swing and how all it takes is a little bit of momentum to get the job done.

The American League defeated the National League 4-0 on Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, taking advantage of an early offensive surge that was really all it needed.

And truthfully, the most consequential moments of the game came in the very first inning.

New York Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger ripped a two-run single to give the American League an early lead, and then his teammate Ben Rice followed immediately with an RBI single of his own.

While the American League added another run later in the game to get to its fourth and final run, those first-inning scores, produced entirely by Yankees hitters, were all it took given the National League didn’t score a single run.

And because Bellinger was responsible for half of the American League’s offense, he was named the All-Star Game MVP. He became the fourth Yankees player to earn the honor and the first since Giancarlo Stanton in 2022.

It was also a game in which pitching was the key.

The American League, as a combined unit, threw a shutout against a lineup loaded with some of the biggest names in baseball. That made it a somewhat slow night for the crowd in Philadelphia because, again, the game was truthfully won in the first inning.

And that’s what makes the All-Star Game so unique.

From here, the season shifts toward the second half, where the playoff races will really begin to take shape.

But for one night, Cody Bellinger and his Yankees teammate were the reason the American League came out on top.
