2022 MLB Picks: Betting Angles, Handicapping Thoughts For June 1

MLB picks

The MLB schedule is a long journey lasting more than half of the year. While that makes it a grind, it also makes it a tremendous betting opportunity. It gives our MLB picks ample time to build a sample and hopefully overcome variance, and it provides the biggest menu of bets (and potential value) when compared to almost any other sport.

For the 2022 MLB season, bettors interested in following some daily betting angles can find write-ups here.

Atlanta Braves At Arizona Diamondbacks

This is simply a massive mismatch in starting pitching quality. Kyle Wright suddenly looks like one of the best starters in the majors. He’s doing it all — almost 52% grounders, a 3.18 SIERA, a 30.9% called strike+whiff rate, and enough contact management for a 3.41 xERA. Everything he’s done points to “he’s just a great pitcher now” but the projections haven’t caught up, still expecting a below-average performance. Madison Bumgarner, on the other hand, is rocking a 4.88 SIERA. While he has proven he can outpitch his peripherals, even if he does so here, we’re still looking at around a 4.5 ERA going forward. I’m more optimistic than the projection on Bumgarner and I still think the Braves are underpriced here with a borderline ace facing a poor Diamondbacks lineup.

Current best price: Braves

Tampa Bay Rays At Texas Rangers

I have surely lost more units fading the Rangers than any other team so I’m obviously back for more pain here, and the market has let me know that I’m going to meet my usual fate as you can now get the Rays at a better price than I did. Jeffrey Springs has been tremendous now for two years running in mostly relief, but his transition to starting has gone beautifully. He’s missing all of the bats with a monster 14.6% swinging strike rate, featuring a disgusting 38.4 O-Swing%.

Jon Gray still projects a little bit below average due to his reliance on his poor heater, which he throws more than 50% of the time. Add in the Rays’ advantage in lineup strength even with Wander Franco out and I think they should be closer to -130 here, so around -120 seems like a fine spot for a small play.

Current best prices: Rays

What to know about using MLB Picks

Generally, when looking over these MLB lines and breakdowns, there are a few things to keep in mind.

First, it’s a long season. There will be hot and cold streaks. Swings of 20+ units will happen. While I’ve had multiple winning seasons, there’s no guarantee I’ll come out ahead this year or any other. Always bet responsibly, and always line shop using our MLB page to find the best lines available at legal sportsbooks in your state. That will give you the best chance of turning a profit.

Furthermore, note that because of the process I’ll be using (attacking overnight markets), lines may shift significantly by the time you read this if you’re checking it out on game day. Hopefully the lines have moved in my favor, and if that’s the case – use your best judgment as to whether you still think the bet is as good as the current line.

I’ll base my plays heavily on starting pitchers, like most any MLB bettor. If you want to learn more about baseball so you can do your own handicapping, start with these resources breaking down a variety of useful metrics:
