MLB Odds: Seattle Mariners at Texas Rangers
Exploring The Mariners’ “Ace”
Seattle will send southpaw Robbie Ray to the mound versus a dangerous Rangers lineup. Last year’s AL Cy Young winner has turned around his 2022 campaign, generating a 1.41 ERA to go along with a 2.55 FIP over his last six starts.
Ray began employing his sinker at the highest rate (14.3%) of his career during this stretch, lowering his four-seam fastball usage in the process.
Nevertheless, the 30-year-old doesn’t possess anything that’s overpowering. His 95.3 Stuff+, measuring the quality of a pitcher’s stuff based on the physical characteristics of his pitches, speaks to that notion.
His opponent’s average exit velocity also sits in the 26th percentile (Baseball Savant), which is fairly low for a pitcher with his resume.
To make matters worse for Ray, Texas owns the second-highest wRC+ against lefties, and its efficiency is roughly league average versus sinkers. Corey Seager & Co. should be in position to do damage against him as a result.

On the flip side, Texas will employ an “opener” approach, starting with the intriguing Matt Bush, who showcases 115.1 Stuff+. Projecting what to expect from the Rangers’ league-average bullpen is difficult, especially versus Julio Rodriguez and a powerful Mariners’ offense.
With that being said, I’m taking a shot with Texas, considering Ray’s peripherals prove his recent dominance may not carry over into tonight.
