BetMGM Betting Data: MLB Division Liability After Trade Deadline

Written By FairwayJay on August 3, 2022
mlb division odds

As August baseball begins and the pennant chase continues towards the World Series, three division leaders are more than 11 games in front, while MLB division odds in three divisions remain tight. Plenty of excitement remains with key series down the stretch with division winners and playoff wild cards to be determined.

The trade deadline on Aug. 2 also affected the World Series odds for teams at the top and in the pennant chase. Less than two weeks ago at the All-Star break, the Dodgers, Mets, Yankees and Astros were all on pace to win at least 100 games and easily eclipse their 2022 season win total despite being the top teams in that market.

Our sportsbook contacts at BetMGM have updated the futures odds to win the divisions, and added some insight on which teams have generated the highest ticket count and handle to win each division.

MLB division odds and BetMGM data

AL East Odds

  • Highest Ticket: Blue Jays 34.5%
  • Highest Handle: Yankees 55.6%
  • Biggest Liability: Orioles

With the evolution of New York sports betting promos and the continued strong performance of the Yankees and Mets, it’s no surprise that the Yankees have generated by far the biggest handle and most money bet in the American League. The Yankees and MVP favorite Aaron Judge enter August with a 69-34 record and the most wins in baseball while leading the AL East by 11.5 games over Toronto. The Blue Jays and Yankees started the season as +200 co-favorites to win the AL East.

“New York’s odds are now -5000 and have shortened from -2000 since the start of July,” BetMGM told TheLines. The Blue Jays are now +2500.

The Yankees play 10 straight division games starting Aug. 12 with three at Boston before returning home to battle the Tampa Bay Rays and Blue Jays.

AL Central Odds

  • Highest Ticket: Tigers 46.3%
  • Highest Handle: White Sox 33.3% and Twins 31.7%
  • Biggest Liability: Tigers

The Minnesota Twins hold just a one-game lead over the Cleveland Guardians and two-game edge over the Chicago White Sox in the AL Central. But the White Sox are essentially co-favorites with the Twins in MLB division odds. Minnesota doesn’t play the Guardians or White Sox until September when they battle Cleveland for eight games and the White Sox for nine including a season-ending series at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago.

AL West Odds

  • Highest Ticket: Mariners 36.3%
  • Highest Handle: Mariners 34.0%
  • Biggest Liability: Athletics

The Houston Astros odds are now off the board due to their division lead at BetMGM.

NL East Odds

  • Highest Ticket: Phillies 39.5%
  • Highest Handle: Mets 34.0% and Braves (33.8%)
  • Biggest Liability: Phillies

The New York Mets hold a 2.5-game lead over the defending World Series champions Atlanta Braves. Since the Fourth of July, BetMGM notes “the Mets odds to win the NL East have gone from -165 to -300 while the Braves have gone from +155 to +240.”

The Mets and Braves started the season as near co-favorites in MLB division odds. Both teams have taken nearly identical 34% of the handle to win the division with the Philadelphia Phillies close behind at 28.4%.

The Mets and Braves start a key 5-game series Aug. 4 at Citi Field in Queens, NY. Starting Aug. 12, the Mets play the Phillies in seven games and have four road games at Atlanta and two more at Yankee Stadium as part of the Subway Series.

But with the return of Jacob deGrom from a forearm injury and the Mets ace set to make his season debut Aug. 2 at Washington, the Mets rotation gets a huge boost after Max Scherzer missed all of June with an oblique injury.

The Mets only trail the Los Angeles Dodgers in World Series and division odds and money wagered.

NL Central Odds

  • Highest Ticket: Cardinals 42.1%
  • Highest Handle: Cardinals 42.4% and Brewers 41.3%
  • Biggest Liability: Reds

The Milwaukee Brewers hold a 2-game lead over the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Central. The Brewers and Cardinals meet for a 3-game series in St. Louis starting Aug. 12 before Milwaukee returns home for a 4-game series against the LA Dodgers.

NL West Odds

  • Highest Ticket: Rockies 31.8%
  • Highest Handle: Dodgers 70.1%
  • Biggest Liability: Rockies

The Dodgers entered August 68-33 and have taken the most money to win any division with 70.1% of the handle. Los Angeles has extended its NL West lead to 11.5 games over the San Diego Padres.

“The Dodgers have had the most notable division odds movement since the start of July, going from -300 to -10000 to win the NL West,” BetMGM added. The San Diego Padres have dropped from +300 to +2500, but the Padres still have the second-best record in the wild card chase and a 5.5 game lead over the San Francisco Giants for the third wild card spot. San Diego also bolstered the back end of their bullpen Aug. 1 trading for All-Star closer Josh Hader from the Milwaukee Brewers. The Dodgers start August with seven games against division rivals Giants and Padres.
