Will preseason trend persist?

You’re not alone if you’ve thought 2024 NFL preseason games have gone under the total at an absurd rate. They are 26-7 (78.8%) over the first two weeks, the best start for preseason unders over the last 20 seasons.

As a result, the market has somewhat corrected itself in Week 3. Given the aggressive nature of the Vikings’ offense under third-year head coach Kevin O’Connell, this one could go over the total. With Sam Darold on the pine after being named the team’s starting quarterback, partly because rookie J.J. McCarthy suffered a season-ending torn meniscus, backups Jarren Hall and Matt Corral will presumably split the reps. Veteran Nick Mullens could also see time under center, but it’s unlikely.

Those betting on the Minnesota Vikings’ odds or the over are banking on Hall to pick apart the Eagles’ backup defense, which has allowed just 13 points per game in the preseason.

Hall started the second half in the Vikings’ second preseason game versus the Browns, completing 4-of-5 passes for 87 yards, two scores, and no interceptions. With only 11 plays run, his sample size was small. Meanwhile, Corral’s lone dropback resulted in a sack.

Conversely, the Eagles will roll with Kenny Pickett and Tanner McKee, continuing their duel for the backup QB gig. If Pickett falls short, he’s been rumored to be in trade talks. Hence, both signal-callers will have plenty of motivation.
